It's Better to Give than to Receive

I believe that it's better to give than receive.

Usually my mom would pick out which gifts I give to my family. I would act like I knew what it was. When About 75% of the time I had absolutely no idea. I was more focused on opening my own gifts than caring about the gifts they opened. In 2022 when I was twelve I don't know what compelled me but I chose to pick out two gifts for my Dad. One was taking my Dad to a concert to a band he liked. I remember when I bought the tickets the anticipation of telling him was killing me. I found my younger self giving my Dad hints of what it was. I couldn’t wait to tell him. That's when I realized that I was way more excited to give the gift to him than the anticipation of receiving a gift.

When my Dad found out what I had gotten for his birthday he was happy and proud of me for finding such a good gift for him. We made the 30 minute drive to the venue. Finally the main band made their way on to the stage as clouds started surrounding the venue. As they started playing their first song a heavy rain fell and we were well outside the roof. It was ok as I embraced it. Just then a whole bunch of thunder and lightning started and my brother was worried and had wanted to leave. Eventually we left just in the middle of the third song. As we started the long descent down the hill. We saw some of the venue workers offering free tickets for people to go under the roof for people that were leaving because of the rain. We took the tickets and were there for the whole rest of the show. It is still my favorite concert I have been to. This made me feel a sense of pride and importance and made me feel fulfilled and appreciated.

Kindness is another way that giving it better than receiving. Even if I do something as little as open a door, the gratitude people show is incredible. It’s such a good feeling to do this. I know people can sometimes even remember a compliment for months. To do something as simple as complement them can make their entire day if not week! I know I like hearing good things about myself. It also makes me feel good to volunteer for things that need doing. It helps make something better and there is always so much thanks and appreciation. I also believe in giving out politeness, please and thank you’s are absolutely vital for me. Even if you think someone doesn't deserve it. If we at least try to do one act of kindness each day it can change peoples days if not lives. To have a positive role model or relationship with at least one person is healthy and beneficial to not just the other person but you too!

I love making other people feel good about themselves and giving things I think people really appreciate. I really believe that being kind and giving is more fulfilling to yourself than receiving something. Whether it's something simple as holding the door for someone, putting a lot of time and effort into a gift or something on the world scale.

This I believe.
