Happy Read Across America Week at the SLC! This week we celebrate Dr. Seuss and ALL things we love about reading. We have many fun events planned throughout the week and that includes our time in our Go Blue Reading Groups. This week we will focus both on real and nonsense words when making words...especially because "nonsense" words are some of Dr. Seuss' favorites. We will complete -ing and -ink word family sorts, rhyming sorts, read some of our favorite Dr. Seuss books to practice fluency during Read to Self... and even read some new guided reading books of our own! :) We will work on responding to texts through question and answer pages focusing on the Main Idea and details of the books we read. This is one of the BEST weeks at the SLC to celebrate the gift of reading we share with each other each day! We have been exploring a new LLI Classroom Set of books. Check out some other books below that are on the same level. You can search for sight words, words with suffixes, or glued sounds on each page. Happy Reading!!
This week, Mrs. Manning's Go Blue Rockstars will continue to move and groove showing off their literacy skills. We will explore new texts, use our decoding strategies to read unknown words, and also dive deeper into word work with the welded sounds -ong and -onk. Students will practice writing and "marking up" glued sounds in their word family journals as well as sorting words through a cut and glue word sort. Students will also continue working on writing through written response and this week we will focus heavily on retelling the story with a Main Idea and supporting details. We moved up to a new reading level! We read a book that was familiar to some students called "Stone Soup." The students enjoyed reading this book to figure out what stone soup was. We discussed the message of the story. Students shared opinions based on reasoning to explain if the man's actions were right or wrong. With this text, we working on sequencing. There was also a readers' theater or a "play/script" in the back to practice our fluency and prosody.
We then read "The Missing Cat," another text in our Meg and Hugs series. In this text, the problem was that Hugs was missing and Meg, Gram, and Gramps could not find him. We read to find out where Hugs went and why. With this text, we focused on identifying character traits to describe Hugs.
