Putting on a play is a very exciting and involved process and requires a great deal of community support for success. There are all kinds of jobs to be done, people to coordinate, and budgets and deadlines to meet. Luckily, our Windemere Ranch Middle School PTSA has rallied around our Performing Arts programs and kept them flourishing.
Parents of students cast in our musical production, are requested to dedicate a minimum of 2 volunteer hours per family. Parent Participation jobs are mostly supervising student actors and stage crew backstage, in dressing rooms, while designing scenery on Friday or Saturday "Work Days,” or assisting with costumes and props. Many times, parents have particular skills to lend to certain aspects of production, such as set construction, providing concessions, scenic painting, lights and sound, sewing, stage make up, or hairstyling. Most parents have a good time working side by side with students, and I always have a great time getting to know students and their families better.
**Please be sure you have signed and returned the Audition Form, so we have your contact information and parent/guardian permission for student participation.
**After casting, please fill out the Parent/Guardian Volunteer Participation Sign-Up Genius to indicate your job preferences. Link will be listed below.
Producing a musical is also quite expensive. Just acquiring performance rights and paying show royalties takes a hefty chunk out of the budget, and there are costs of lights and sound equipment, materials to construct scenery, and costumes and props to buy or rent.
While mounting a school production is quite costly, the After School Musical program receives no funding from the district and must raise all the money required to produce the musical. In order to have school plays, our productions must be entirely self-supporting through donations and ticket sales. We are thankful to PTSA for supporting us the first year, but to continue this tradition, we must make enough to fund the following years’ productions.
In order for this year’s students to have the same opportunities and resources as other after school activities like sports, it is necessary to ask for a donation and for parents to sign up for production volunteer jobs. The per student donation request is $100.00, similar to the extra-curricular sports program. This donation covers 10 weeks of rehearsal and instruction, vocal coaching, technical instruction for crew, 2 performances, and many of the costume requirements. It will also help support the program to become self-sustaining for future years in order to do an after school musical. Similar after school performing arts programs charge three times this amount for participation. Thank you for your consideration and support!
