Casting Process
The casting process can be a very emotional time for all involved. Many students will be vying for the same roles, and only a select number can be cast accordingly. Although everyone auditioning will be placed in the show (their schedules allowing), students not selected for certain roles can feel extremely disappointed. While it's impossible to make everyone happy during this process, students should feel assured that everyone auditioning will be given equal consideration for all roles and equal time to demonstrate their abilities. Please read the criteria below for more detailed information on casting policies and procedures.
All Roles Open
All WRMS students in all grade levels are invited to try out for Bye Bye Birdie. In some cases, certain roles specify a male or female performer, otherwise, any student mayaudition for any role. Students of all backgrounds, sizes, shapes and grade levels will be considered for all roles. Students do not have to look like the original image or performer to be considered. Stage presence and acting and singing ability are infinitely more important to a casting director than looking like the original interpretation of the part.
Dealing with Disappointment
Sometimes younger performers want to know "what they did wrong" after the cast list is posted. Usually, the answer is that they did nothing wrong; they had a strong audition but another performer was a better choice for the part they wanted. It's sometimes hard for students to accept that although they worked hard for something, wanted it badly, and felt good about their audition, they didn't get cast. While it may be tempting to demand explanations from the director, talk down the students who were selected, or act out in some other way, these actions benefit no one. The best way to recover is to be gracious about casting decisions. Try to get excited about the role received and being part of the play as a whole. If not cast in your dream role this time, understand that casting is show specific: a student who doesn't quite fit in this role may be perfect for another one. Students should be proud of themselves for auditioning at all, and keep at it if they truly want to keep performing.
