Make sure you’ve selected the correct Application Plan/Deadline (ex: Early Admission, Regular Decision). Your recommenders will go by the deadline listed in SchooLinks to submit your materials.
Many colleges do not require recommendations from teachers or counselors.
UCs and CSUs do not require or accept recommendations.
Ask your teacher and counselor in person if they will write a recommendation for you and follow their process/instructions on how to provide information they will use to write your recommendation.
The general timeline to request a letter of rec is at least one month prior to your earliest application deadline.
Do not wait for your counselor or teacher to submit their materials
before submitting your application
Students need to submit their portion of the Common App by the college’s deadline.
Transcripts, School Reports, and Recommendations are separate from the student’s portion of the college application.
Items sent by teachers and counselors are considered supplemental or supporting documents, which will only be viewed by colleges if the student submits their portion of the application on time.
Counselors and teachers are aware of your deadlines and will submit their materials for you – but please know that colleges often have a later deadline for supporting documents and/or a grace period for counselors & teachers to submit their materials.
While teachers and counselors have flexibility on their submission deadlines, students do not.
Your counselor will submit your transcript as part of the School Report & your recommendation (if required) to Common App by your earliest deadline.
Your teacher(s) will submit their recommendation by your earliest deadline.
The School Report, transcript, and recommendations are sent one time; they are not submitted multiple times for each individual college.
Once these materials are submitted, they are available for colleges to download, if they need them, but only AFTER students submit their portion of the application.
If you apply to Common App schools after these materials have been submitted, these new colleges will also be able to download your School Report, transcript, and recommendations (if required).
If you decide NOT to apply to a college currently on your Common App/SchooLinks College List, these colleges will not download your materials from Common App.
Colleges only download the transcript, School Report, and recommendations (if applicable) if the student submits their portion of the application.
Students have many choices when it comes to how to apply to colleges, and there are a variety of application platforms to use. We hope you find this navigation tool helpful as you and your parents decide which is best for you.
