1. My child is not sure if they are good enough to join your music program. How do I know if they are playing at the right level for High school music classes? We have a place for everyone in the PHS music program. We believe that every student has the ability to learn a musical instrument. Mr. Mayer will ensure that all students are successful in his course, including students with disabilities. Concert band and Concert Choir do not require an audition.
Band Instruments (Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Percussion): All students should sign up for Concert Band. Piner High School has instruments to loan out as need be.
2. Can you take band and another elective? In short: Yes. Mr. Mayer will work with your students and the PHS counseling team to ensure your student gets band and all their required courses :)
3. Can my child play sports (cross country, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, track and field) and join the music program? Yes! We have a large number of student-athletes in our program. We carefully design our concert calendar so that it does not conflict with sports as much as possible. Many of our musicians are top athletes at PHS.
4. How is high school band/choir different from elementary school band/choir? Students often comment that high school band/choir feels much like a “family.” Our students in the high school music program enjoy more frequent public performances and field trips and meet people from all different backgrounds that are coming from all different schools!
5 Are rentals available? Yes, we have both band and orchestra instruments available to rent (free of charge).
7. What type of music will we play in (Band and choir)? Mr. Mayer picks a wide variety of music to play for each ensemble. In the past, our ensembles have performed traditional band/choir literature, pop songs, movie tunes, emo selections, music from around the world, and more.
8. Can my child change instruments in high school? Mr. Mayer allows instrument changes on a case by case basis. Mayer takes into account both the needs of the individual and the ensemble when discussing instrument changes. Students however are encouraged to stay on their instrument so that they can continue to improve and get better rather than starting over again at the beginning level.
9. How many students are in each class? Our class sizes range from 25-40 students, depending on the year and the ensemble
