John Mayer joined the Piner High School staff during the 2022-2023 school year. He is currently in his third year at Piner after spending a year teaching at the Tolenas Academy of Music.
Prior to his teaching career, Mr. Mayer graduated from Maria Carillo High School in 2016 and attended Sonoma State University University for his undergraduate degree in Music Education (2020) and teaching credential (2021). He was inspired to pursue music at a young age by his father Mark Mayer who taught in SRCS for 30 years. When he was young he devoted his time to the school band. He became interested in teaching music during high school after realizing music was the only thing he wanted to spend his time working on.
Mr. Mayer performs with multiple professional and semi-professional ensembles and orchestras. He performs regularly with various pit orchestras around Sonoma County, records and performs with touring bands, and does subwork around Northern California. He is known for his trombone playing and teaching but also performs on guitar, bass, euphonium, tuba and more.
He also is an active member of the following professional organizations: NAfME and CMEA
