Sport
What an incredibly busy term of Sport it has been! But one of the highlights the last few busy weeks was yesterday, when our entire school took to the water in the Senior Aquatics Inter-house competition. Staff will remember in years to come those deafening and screechy war cries of Dominic, Thomas and Maccy as the houses were led enthusiastically and very loudly by their Captains and Matrics. Cowboys, caps and cabaret themes abounded and the gala commenced with a very interesting lilo/mattress ride across the pool by the house captains, who were subjected to pelting water-polo balls as they balanced on their floating vessels, invariably being tossed into the water and swimming the remainder of the race. The friendly rivalry among the houses was consistent to the bitter end. The display of school spirit during this event was an incredible sight to behold, and something one would hold very dear - the opportunity of our children to be children and have fun in a setting of good-natured competition.
Indoor Hockey League
Last week commenced our 7th week and last of indoor hockey fixtures versus Westerford. Everyone has really played amazingly throughout the indoor hockey season and the majority have learnt many new skills and additions to their hockey game.
1sts: 5-3 W
2nds: 4-1 W
3rds: 1-1 D
4ths: 0-3 L
5ths: 2-1 W
6th: 1-1 D

A massive congrats to all the players for a successful term of indoor hockey! Good luck for winter sports starting next term.
Thank you for Caylee Nell and Jennifer Mitchell for all their hard work and dedication in keeping the huge wheels of Indoor Hockey turning throughout this very busy term.
Swimming
Congratulations to the Springfield swimming team that did exceptionally well last week! Springfield hosted and competed in the PGSGU Inter Schools gala last week Tuesday where we placed 2nd, just missing first place by a few points. A special mention to our under 14 relay team that won all their races! Springfield also took part in the annual A league gala that took place at Rondebosch last week Wednesday. It was an exciting afternoon for both the swimmers and supporters with very close races. Thank you so much to the spirit portfolio, teachers and Springfield supporters who came out to support their school! Well done girls for a brilliant season of great swimming! We look forward to what’s to come, rest well and get ready for the fourth term for some more competitive swimming!!! Thank you to Savanna O"Brien for leading our swimmers as their Captain this term.
Diving
On Saturday 7 March Springfield hosted a diving competition against Wynberg Girls. We had 11 senior divers and 13 junior divers who participated. The girls did Springfield proud and beat Wynberg overall. However, for me it was lovely to see so many girls diving, to witness the improvement of those who have learnt new dives, perfected old ones and sometimes done something that they never thought they were capable of. At the same time there was lots of support and encouragement for each other and even our opposition. Special congratulations go to Olivia Gomes who has won the junior section of each of the competitions this term as well as Anna Meager and Anna Savage who were placed in the top five in both competitions. In the senior section Jayde Jagga and Jemima Hindmarch both placed in the top five in both competitions. I would also like to thank Jemima our diving captain for her commitment to diving over the last five years, for all her coaching of younger divers, all the work she has done behind the scenes and most importantly for her constant encouragement of everyone.
Water-Polo
This season of Water-polo saw our girls learning such a lot and having a journey of fun and fellowship along the way. Thank you to all our players for their dedication and involvement this term. A huge thank you to our coaches as well as Jamie Kruger and Hannah Polley for their leadership this term.
Rowing
We are incredibly proud of our rowers who represented Springfield in Pretoria this past weekend at the South African Championships regatta. In the school races, Zandra Axten managed to beat 38 other boats to make her way into the U15 1x final, and Shannon Fussell and Jossie Kane-Smith raced a beautiful doubles race in their heat which found them a spot in a very competitive U16 2x final.
This weekend was also the first time in the history of Springfield, that a Springfield 8 has competed. It was an exciting moment watching the girls race and make history.
In the club races, Dana Prodehl and Tahlia Rossouw won gold and silver (respectively) in their final races as school rowers in the Open 2- club final. Tahlia, Emma Dore and Dana won gold and Haylen Accom, Kara Venter, Sarah Wilson and Sarah Wickham won Silver in the Open 4x club final. Megan May and Darcy Gliddon won silver and Zandra Axten and Paige Lewis won bronze in the U15 2x club final. Darcy, Paige, Zandra and Megan also won gold in the U15 4x club final.
Overall, it was an incredible weekend, and the Springfield girls flew the Springfield flag high.
Indoor Hockey - PGSGU Inter-Schools
PGSGU inter schools indoor hockey took place on Saturday 7th of March at Herschel. It was a tough day of Indoor hockey with Springfield beating St.Cyps 2-0, beating Rustenburg 4-1, drawing to Wynberg 0-0 and losing to Herschel 1-0. The competition was nail-biting and ended up very close with three schools on the same number of points. Our goal average marked us as the over-all winners of the tournament which is a fabulous achievement! A massive congrats to the first team for winning Interschools along with winning the indoor hockey league! The girls have put in a lot of effort into the indoor hockey season and it is great to see how the hard work has paid off!!
Non School Sport: Cape Town Cycle Tour
On Sunday 8 March, 9 Springfielders got on their bicycles or tandems with their dads and took on the challenge of completing the 109km Cape Town Cycle Tour...with great success! The morning was warm with no wind initially. Stronger winds picked up and then....The Rain. This typical Cape Town weather meant it was a tough race for a few of the cyclists. Our cyclists were:
Julia Marx
Anna Marx
Emma Neill
Hannah Latham
Eve Bosanquet
Grace Pickard (tandem)
Erin Oosthuizen (tandem)
Rebecca Bernhardi (tandem)
Caitlyn de Mink (tandem)
Caitlyn de Mink cycled for charity. Her efforts were in aid of the upgrade and expansion of the Emergency Centre at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. This unit treats over 45,000 seriously ill and injured children each year. Together Caitlyn and her dad raised R6000. Warm congratulations are extended to all our committed cyclists!

Karate
Francesca Quercia, Danella Quercia and Chloë Kröhnert competed in their second Kimura Shukokai regionals karate competition on Saturday the 7th of March. All three girls have been chosen to represent South Africa at the World Championships in July which will be held in Cape Town.
The next Highland and Irish competition is on 18 April 2020,
at Springfield
Irish Dance
The Springfield Irish dancers have had a bumper weekend, with grade exams on Friday and their first competition of the year on Saturday. Georgia Walsh and Tavia Quarmby did exceptionally well. Georgia excelled with five 1st places, a 2nd place and a 5th place. Tavia also did exceptionally well with a 1st place, two 2nd places and a 4th place.
These girls really deserve recognition for the years and years of work they have put into their dancing. They are working incredibly hard and are currently preparing to return to the South African Championships in Gauteng in September once again. They also both did their grade 8 exams on Friday.
What a very busy sporting start to a very busy sporting year! Please see the timeline above which reflects all the tours and festivals in which we are going to participate. More will be added to the calendar as and when invitations come in.
