Today kicked off the busy academic programme for the upcoming week with the Grade 8s writing the SACEE spelling competition and the Grade 11s attending the first day of the Western Cape Schools Festival, which wraps up tomorrow. Also scheduled for the next week is the second of the three Grade 12 Life Orientation Island days, which focuses on stressors and stress management. Thanks to the teaching staff for creating such valuable experiences both in and out of the classroom for all of the pupils at Springfield!
Grade 9 Creative Arts Rotations
The Grade 9s will have their first set of Creative Arts rotations this coming Monday and Tuesday. The rotations will take place in the first three lessons each day. Pupils who have chosen Art as their second option should report to the Fra Angelico Art Centre, pupils who have chosen Drama should report to the Study Hall (surnames A - K) or Room 9 (surnames L - Z), and pupils who have chosen Music to the Music Annex. This promises to be a day of enrichment and enjoyment, but the workshops also fulfill the assessment requirements laid out by the Western Cape Education Department, meaning that any absences need to be accompanied by a medical certificate. Pupils who are unsure of their second option subject for Creative Arts should clarify this with Mrs Ballantyne by the end of the week.
Grade 10 Life Orientation Island Day
The Grade 10s experienced their first Island Day on 6 March. This term’s theme was identity and personal branding, one of the core aspects of the Life Orientation curriculum in this grade. The session was run by a young and vibrant team from Lead4Life and began with a session in which the girls identified aspects of themselves as leaders of the future from inspirational figures from the media, world religions and politics. The day switched between rich discussions around the way that people affect other people and application activities, the most popular of which was “The Mole Game,” which taught the pupils lessons about trust, personal perceptions, biases and collaboration. The successful day was followed up with a formal assessment on the morning of the Birthday Mass - a reminder that the Island Days form a fully legitimate part of the Life Orientation curriculum at Springfield.
Grade 11 Life Orientation Island Day
The Grade 11s enjoyed a jam-packed Life Orientation Island Day on 5 March. This year, the Grade 11s are working with Growing Foxes, which encourages innovative thinking in an everchanging world. The morning began with a two-hour session working on the butterfly effect where the pupils split into groups and worked on individual ideas. We were also lucky enough to have the Anzisha Prize and Allan Gray Orbis Foundation visit to discuss the exciting world of entrepreneurship. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils, who are looking forward to our next session with Growing Foxes.
The theme of International Women’s Day 2020 is, I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights. We celebrate the young women of our art department, by sharing some of the matric pieces of current grade 12 girls and past matric girls.
