In a previous newsletter we noted the visit of the Culture Club to the Fugard Theatre to see Master Harold and the Boys. This week we would like to share a review of the event by Imaan Jacobs, Head of Culture Club:
Culture Club Outings to “Master Harold”… and the Boys and When We Awake
Culture Club is an extramural activity which involves attending a variety of drama, art and music performances on alternate Tuesdays at various venues, and it has been something that I have taken part in for as long as I have attended Springfield.
We kicked off the year with an appearance at the Fugard Theatre to attend one of Athol Fugard’s world-renowned and award-winning plays, "Master Harold”... and the Boys. It is an extremely relevant and enlightening piece as it explores inbred racism and the breeding of hatred as a result of Apartheid. Coincidentally, this happens to be the set work for Drama in Grade 9, and it was met with great excitement from both students who have studied it and students who have yet to experience it in the classroom. Culture Club member Kara Lamb said, “The production was not a disappointment, and it left an awe-struck audience reeling. "Master Harold”... and the Boys was phenomenal. It sparked dialogue between classmates and parents and was excellently performed."
After the success at The Fugard, the next event produced excited curiosity. When We Awake at The Baxter Theatre was, in no uncertain terms, pure brilliance, and a personal favourite. Produced and presented by young South African women, When We Awake is a feminism-focused drama that kept everyone on the edge of their seats, including the teachers in attendance. Mrs Hughes said that "The actors invested so much into the performance they portrayed, it made me invest a little bit of myself in it too."
Our next outing is to see The Producers at Theatre on the Bay on 17 March.
