Grade 8 Technology Workshop Day

The Grade 8 Technology day is a unique opportunity for the grade to spend a day engaging with a technological topic.

• Mr Henning taught web design and his group was taught to design and style a website using HTML and CSS. The learners were divided into groups to work on their websites. By the end of the day, the learners had surprised themselves with just how much they were able to achieve and they gained a newfound respect for what goes into making their favourite websites functional.
• Mr Morgendal's group created toys that incorporated simple machines. The learners had to come up with ideas of what they could create. They had to compile a design brief which included identifying a problem, specifications, constraints, and planning and evaluation for their toy. The Grade 8s worked very well together and Mr Morgendal thoroughly enjoyed working with them!
• Mr Quinn's group looked at the development of an open container, designing and constructing some packaging to hold an imaginary product. They also used the skills they learnt in graphic communication to draw a two-point perspective image of a cityscape.
• Ms Wyllie’s class was divided into groups to make a video for YouTube to share information about structures. Groups made videos about roof structures, bridges, benches, balconies and stages. The films were creative, informative and well researched; the girls learnt what keeps a structure standing and how to make them strong. More importantly though, they learnt to collaborate to make good films.

We look forward to the next set of Technology rotations in Grade 8. Our new approach has most certainly been a rewarding experience for the Grade 8s of 2020.

Grade 9 Creative Arts Rotations

The Grade 9s will have their first set of Creative Arts rotations this coming Monday and Tuesday. The rotations will take place in the first three lessons each day. Pupils who have chosen the Art as their second option should report to the Fra Angelico Art Centre, pupils who have chosen Drama should report to the Study Hall (surnames A - K) or Room 9 (surnames L - Z), and pupils who have chosen Music to the Music Annex. This promises to be a day of enrichment and enjoyment, but the workshops also fulfill the assessment requirements laid out by the Western Cape Education Department, meaning that any absences need to be accompanied by a medical certificate. Pupils who are unsure of their second option subject for Creative Arts should clarify this with Mrs Ballantyne by the end of the week.
