In partnership with the world renowned Playwrights’ Center, students will have the opportunity to explore the art of playwriting in an intensive, collaborative environment. Guided by a professional artist affiliated with the Playwrights’ Center, students will learn the fundamentals of writing for the stage while developing their own original five-minute plays. Over the course of the project, they will experiment with character, dialogue, and structure, gaining insight into how ideas on the page can be transformed into live performance.
The project culminates in a workshop-style staged reading at the Playwrights' Center, where students will perform their completed 5-minute plays for an audience. Using music stands and minimal staging, the focus is on the text, providing students with the opportunity to showcase their work in a professional theater environment. This culminating event not only highlights their work as emerging playwrights and performers, but also provides an authentic connection to one of the nation’s leading organizations dedicated to new play development. Through this experience, students will sharpen their creative voices, build confidence as writers, and contribute their own perspectives to the vibrant tradition of new work for the stage.
