Haifa Railway Underpasses (Halutzey Ha`taasiya)
Two road underpasses, under operating rails. Both structures were executed without interrupting rail activity.
Both are app. 4 m. below ground water table and are “vessel type” structures, fully sealed to prevent flooding. Special drainage - pumping system is incorporated, to control ground water table changes.
One structure is a twin-cell section and the other is a single cell. section. Execution process is a “top to bottom” process (excavations performed after utilizing the bridge deck for rail activities).
Total cost app. $6,000,000
Aluf Sadeh Underpass, Ramat Gan
A four lane underpass, takes 4 out of the 8 lanes of a highly congested arterial road, to allow a through traffic under a busy crossing. Retaining walls along ramps are made of reinforced concrete soldier-pile wall, covered by a C.I.P architectural concrete.
Deck of structure in the crossing area is made of precast, pre-tensioned concrete inverted T beams, side by side, and a complementary C.I.P concrete to form a rigid frame structure spanning over 16 m.
Construction was a top to bottom process, and all concrete works and excavations under the deck were performed after utilizing the bridge.
To avoid traffic problems during construction, the deck was constructed in two consecutive halves, while shifting the center of the junction by a few meters and slightly detouring traffic to temporary lanes 4m aside.
Total cost app. $ 2,000,000.
Dolphin Junction, Haifa
The underpass is crossing a triple track railway line in Haifa, for a dual carriageway road, 3m. below ground water table, executed in a congested urban area, without any interfere to rail activities or traffic flow.
The walls are made of bored piles with complimentary concrete surfacing, deck is made of pre-fabricated pre-stressed inverted tee girders, with concrete topping, floor is made of cast in place concrete connected to surfacing concrete of walls.
The entire structure is water proof, and anchored to the ground by the piles to counteract water pressures and up-lift forces. Special drainage system is provided, to control ground water levels to avoid water overpressures on structure.
Total cost app. $5,000,000
