Sparta Township is run by a local council which acts as the primary legislative body of the town. The Council is responsible for creating laws, passing local ordinances, and supervising the town's annual budget. Council members are elected for four-year terms on a staggered basis, meaning 2-3 seats come up for election every 2 years. The Council is also responsible for electing a mayor among themselves for a 1-year term.
