Districts HAVE changed:

In January 2022 districts changed, making Sussex County no longer part of District 11. Now the county is divided between District #5 and District #7.

  • District #5 now includes: Andover Township, Branchville Borough, Frankford Township, Franklin Borough, Hamburg Borough, Hampton Township, Hardyston Township, Lafayette Township, Montague Township, Town of Newton, Sandyston Township, Sussex Borough, Vernon Township, Wantage Township

  • District #7 now includes: Andover Borough, Byram Township, Fredon Township, Green Township, Hopatcong Borough, Ogdensburg Borough, Sparta Township, Stanhope Borough, Stillwater Township, Walpack Township

How Redistricting is Done:

  • States are divided into districts

  • All members of the House of Representatives, and many state and local legislatures are elected by districts

  • New Jersey's districts are drawn by "politician commissions," where elected officials serve as members of the commission

  • All districts should have almost the same population, which is determined by the census

  • Redistricting ensures that minority voters have substantial representation. The Voting Rights Act makes it illegal to draw district lines that intentionally harm minorities.

  • District lines can be drawn to favor a political party. This is known as gerrymandering.
