Sussex County Commissioner

County Commissioners are elected representatives that serve on The Board of County Commissioners (previously known as The Board of Chosen Freeholders), Sussex County's main governing body, consisting of 5 Commissioners.

The current members of The Board of County Commissioners are:

  • Anthony Fasano (R)

  • Chris Carney (R)

  • Dawn Fantasia (R)

  • Herbert Yardely (R)

  • Jill Space (R)

History:

  • The county government structure was adopted in New Jersey in 1798

  • Originally, each county of New Jersey was represented by a Freeholder (now known as a commissioner)

  • However, the amount of commissioners is now dependent on the population of each county

Responsibilities of Commissioners:

  • Commissioners serve on the Board of County Commissioners

  • They are responsible for appointing a county administrator who handles day-to-day operation of the county government

  • Commissioners creating and spending budgets for the county government

  • Set policies of four main departments of Sussex County, and addressing regional issues

How they are elected:

  • Commissioners are elected by the voters of Sussex County

  • They serve in three year terms on the Board

  • After their term, Commissioners can run for re-election

Meetings:

  • The Board of County Commissioners meets ever second and fourth Wednesday of each month

  • These meetings are open to the public

  • Meetings are held at: One Spring Street, Newton, NJ 07860
