Kwee Thiam is innovative in his curriculum activities and passionate in teaching his modules. He is also instrumental in using case method pedagogy and flipped learning in the DMB course. He is well versed in EduTech and using technology to engage his students and staff/industry partners.
He recently coordinated the SMA Education and Career forum with a panel of local and overseas representatives and it was a success because the forum was conducted in a creative way using e-invites and QR code.
He is also an inspiration to new colleagues by sharing with them & mentoring them whenever it is required.
Tien Chern was instrumental in developing e-learning activities for students to help them understand mathematics concepts better. For her contribution, she was awarded the ‘Excellence in e-Learning Award in 2011. She has also taken on work in healthcare-related projects with cross-school teams.
As a lecturer, she has taught a wide spectrum of mathematics modules at SP as well as in the Social Innovation Programme. Her students find her friendly, approachable and someone who is concerned for their learning. She always try to help her students see the relevance of mathematics by sharing her experience in some of her projects whereby mathematics is applied.
She has also offered extra time to help out the academically weaker students. Because of her passion in teaching and reaching out to her students, she has consistently received good student feedback scores.
Tow Ming specialises in aircraft engine, which is a core module in the Diploma of Aeronautical Engineering. He has consistently gotten high ratings for his teaching and received very good comments and feedback from students.
Tow Ming is a passionate and committed staff. His work as a MAE EC Club Advisor requires him to go the extra mile to coach and mentor students. He is well respected and well-liked by the students whom he works with. His students find him humorous and he has the ability to make a dry topic interesting. Overall, his teaching methods help to motivate the students to learn and understand what was taught.
Eric is a passionate lecturer who shows interest in students’ learning. He ensures that students understand the lessons and is patient towards slower learners. He engages the students by making the lessons easy to understand with diagrams and addressing students’ questions during and after lessons. He reinforces or enhances students’ learning using simple technologies. He shares his knowledge and experience readily, providing students insights to the FM industry as well as advice on career prospects, progression opportunity and further education options.
A nice, friendly and down-to-earth lecturer who genuinely cares for his students and understands their learning needs. His qualitative feedback from his students includes words such as “nice”, “patient”, and “caring”. Frank makes his lessons fun and engaging for his students, peppering lessons with jokes and veering away from overly using powerpoint slides for his lessons to explain content to his students. He cares about the development and growth of his students as he offers constructive feedback and mentors them to tackle areas for improvement. . Frank has also ventured into CET training on Design Thinking, training audiences such as youth executive committee members from People’s Association and teachers from secondary schools and institutes of higher learning.
Dr He has been very interactive with the class, making it interesting to be in. He has been very patient to ensure all students follow his lab lessons without allowing anyone to lag. His students feel that he interests them in the subject and creates a good energy for the class and it continually helps to motivate and encourage the class to want to learn more
Yenn Giin is a passionate lecturer who consistently demonstrates a keen interest in students’ learning. He is able to personalize his teaching approach to individual students, showing patience towards slower learners, and at the same time engage the faster learners effectively. He often articulates real-world examples to help each student connect with the lessons, and willingly shares his knowledge and experience when advising on career progressions. He also developed systems that helped ease the workload of his team and developed marking processes that allowed staff more time to focus on critiques and teaching.
Jeffrey is popular with the students and most view him as a caring, upfront and concerned lecturer during class time and outside of lessons. Jeffrey continues to support students in managing an external project and mentoring a group of students outside of his lesson. His students appreciate all the industry experience that he brings to the visual effects modules as he would share his working experience giving them a true and accurate insight to the working world.
Most of the time, he doesn’t sugar coat his opinions about the realities of the working culture in the VFX industry. He also shares tips on how to survive and make an impact if they decide to follow their craft.
Dr Jiang has taught two key modules for EEE students, including Power System Analysis and Electrical Engineering Principles. He has always been patient and approachable. He tries his best to ensure each of students in his class understand the topics in the module. Students have said that he is a caring and patient teacher. He does not rush through the topics just because they are behind schedule. He would, however, make sure every single student understands before moving on.
Suma is a key driver of case method (CM) pedagogy in CLS. Working with the school AM team, she made significant contributions toward development of CM workshops, and conducted multiple CM workshops for staff. Her willingness to share her expertise and provide guidance to her colleagues is commendable. Leading by example, Suma is one of the early adopters of case method pedagogy in her classes. With the insights gleaned from the CM classes, Suma co-authored and published a paper entitled “Lecture-Based vs Case-Based Instruction Method in Optometry. A Four-Year Perspective” in an ophthalmology journal. This was also presented at local educational conferences.
Suma is a well-loved and respected amongst students and colleagues. She would always go the extra mile to provide detailed explanations and curate videos on challenging topics for her module, to help students have better understanding and enhance their learning.
Having motherly and positive disposition, Lai Mun strives to ensure every lesson is interesting and engaging. Students are motivated to attend her lesson every week. She is approachable and patient and students feel comfortable clarifying their doubts with her.
Lucas has contributed exceedingly as a specialised module lecturer with the Business Admin & Marketing team. Particularly in the areas of digital and social media marketing. Students have commented him for his approachable yet professional style helping them learn and curate the latest knowledge and skills in project management and digital marketing. His fun and innovative teaching has made his lessons popular and the Marketing Management a sought after Option specialisation amongst the Diploma in Business Administration (DBA) students.
Lucas also often goes beyond his call of duty to prepare additional materials to enable students to learn the latest technology, trends and development regarding his module, sometimes he would invite guest speakers to add currency and relevance to his teaching.
He is also known to render dedicated pastoral care to students who need the additional counselling to help with their family and personal issues.
Lynn is innovative and willing to try new teaching methods. She ensures that her students have a good learning experience in class. She is approachable and patient and students feel safe to consult her with their personal and studies related issues.
She goes the extra mile to understand students’ emotional issues and give them appropriate attention when needed. In her technical module, she is able to use authentic business examples to illustrate the complex theories and computations. She created an innovative teaching method in her tutorial where provides customised learning questions to these 3 different student groups based on their learning understanding of the topic. Students feel that this method is very useful which allows them to learn at their own pace.
In addition, she also provides clear explanation and business case studies for these technical concepts to further reinforce student understanding
Having worked in the pharmaceutical industry for several years prior to joining SP, Ai Ye readily shares her industry knowledge with students so that they are able to relate what they are learning to the chemical engineering industry. She provides encouragement to students when she senses that they are experiencing stressful moments in class. She is a firm and strict lecturer, yet students find her approachable when they seek for clarification in-class and outside of class. While she has to manage “difficult” behaviour in class, she made every effort to ensure students’ learning is undisrupted. This inner strength in her has indeed been an inspiration not only to students, but to us as colleagues too. She is a true blue educator with students in her heart and mind, always.
Sukitha is a lecturer who is dedicated to her students and her craft. She always tries to make her lessons interesting by trying new activities in class. This includes using a combination of edutech tools, hands-on activities and positive reinforcements. She is very popular with students and has consistently received excellent student feedback scores (above 4.5) and positive qualitative feedback from students over many years.
She is always ready to take on new challenges. In AY1819, she readily introduced a flipping content for her module even though it was not selected as a module to be flipped in the DADP course.
Thomas taught Advanced Machining & Metrology and Computer Aided Machining, which are very technical modules. He is passionate about teaching and received very good comments from his students. As he has vast experience in precision industry, he is able to explain difficult concepts by using real world examples to excite the students.
Over the years, Thomas has been training students to participate in national and international competitions such as WorldSkills Singapore (Milling/Turning/Autocad trades). He spent numerous hours to inspire and stretch the students to their fullest potential. Thomas has a proven track record to produce many winners for the WSS and performed well at the international level, WorldSkills Competition.
Being a veteran in these competitions, he was also able to advise and mentor new WorldSkills coaches and experts. His achievement and passion has inspire experts, coaches and students from other trades to put in extra effort.
“Mr Wong makes lessons fun and enjoyable by teaching us in an engaging manner and always help us when we face problems.” This is a typical comment among the students that Allan has taught over the years. They have found him “funny”, “cheerful”, “jovial” yet they appreciate the fact that he can be strict in a fair manner; always emphasizing the importance of personal integrity among the students. He puts in effort to make sure every student understands and enjoys his lessons; and goes the extra mile to help those who are struggling to understand. One student’s comment probably sums up his approach, “He makes lesson interesting and he really make sure that we don’t just know how to connect the circuit but know the reason behind it as well.”
Samson has made the classroom fun and interactive for the students in various modules such as Ethical Hacking and Defences, Applied Cryptography and, Digital Forensics and Investigation. He makes a sincere effort to connect with his students and maintains good relationships with the class and engages the students actively. He has also inspired students beyond the module scope and imparts important life skills to the students. He keeps his lessons interesting, easy to understand supported by practical learning backed by his industry experience.
Samson cares for the welfare of his students and actively encourages them. He is approachable and renders help and ensures that his students keep up with the work. His students have pointed out that he places the priority on student's learning and ensures that students understand the content that is taught.
A trained and experienced teacher from MOE schools, Geraldine Choh has been teaching in SP for nine years and enjoys every minute of her teaching here. Students, too, enjoy every minute of her lesson. Geraldine makes lessons interesting through games and activities and though her lively and expressive delivery. Students speak in awe of her polished diction and how class time is always filled with laughter.
Students consistently give feedback that she is knowledgeable and clear in her explanation and skilful in facilitating discussions on sensitive issues in current affairs. They appreciate her firmness and yet patient, caring coaching and willingness to listen and be there for them when they need help with their assignments.
Lim Li joined SP in 2013 as an Adjunct Lecturer and brings with her a wealth of experience as a trained and experienced teacher who taught in MOE schools for many years.
Besides being able to teach her modules well and give effective guidance to the students Lim Li makes learning fun and engaging through her lively and humorous delivery of lessons. Lim Li communicates her passion for teaching and for nurturing students. Students often give feedback that she cares for their learning, is well-prepared and knowledgeable about her module and that she is ‘on track with class work and makes sure we learn the new skills each week’.
Christina enters each classroom with obvious enthusiasm for teaching, and for her students. Mass Media Research is traditionally a module that some students initially approach with trepidation, as mathematics and statistics are involved. However, Chris is able to turn the students’ initial fear of numbers into a deep appreciation of statistical analysis. After taking her class, her students have said that they love research and statistics. Chris’ passion has even inspired more than a few students to pursue research in their careers or further education.
Chris truly cares for her students, even beyond the classroom. She takes the effort to get to know them personally. Despite being an adjunct lecturer with no personal tutor duties, students readily open up to her about their school or personal difficulties because they know she genuinely cares for them.
Chris is always willing to go above and beyond for her students. She is often on Google docs and Skype late at night doing remote consultations. Based on the research done in the Mass Media Research module, nominated students hold a press conference to present their findings publicly. Chris also voluntarily stays in the evenings and comes to SP over the weekends to train students for the press conference. She does all these on her own accord, without additional pay or formal recognition of her contributions. All she wants is to help the students shine in the press’ limelight. She never considers her teaching done, just because class time has ended.
