Our Goal
Our goal is to recognize Southington High School's various murals as an integral part of our community. For 41 years, there has been an annual practice of the senior students to paint a commemorative mural representing the best people, moments, trends, and memories from the past year. Not only are we able to get a glimpse into the past, we get to see it from the perspective of our amazing seniors.
These images highlight the creativity the students brought to the murals. Together, they tell the story of their senior class and the moments that defined their high school years.
“The Emblem” Billy Zukauskas talks about one of the highlights of his senior year, Playing football in the NY Giants stadium.
Billy Zukauskas, a former student of SHS, talks about his senior year being exciting due to the opportunities he had in “The Emblem”, our school’s Newspaper. He was able to play football in the Giants stadium, this is represented by a helmet in the mural from that year, 2009. This not only lets us reflect on the experiences of one single student, but a celebration of what our school has to offer for their students and the opportunities provided to them.
Recognizing the Students Behind the Murals
Displayed here are some of the former students who became a permanent part of our building through their murals.
The Class of 2012 used icons during history including Marilyn Monroe, the California Raisins, and Lady Gaga which can be seen throughout the long hallway. The year before had featured Katniss from the popular series and movie franchise The Hunger Games, the game Angry Birds, and the famed Harry Potter. As you walk down the historic hallway, you can truly feel the essence of all the past years students have spent at SHS. - 1988 has the winter Olympics where USA won two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. Students also celebrated Canada's defeat in the famed skating rivalry known as “Battle of the Brians” where American Brian Boitano won gold after a thrilling competition.
Samantha Goncalves Interview
I chose to interview Ms. Angiletta, an Art Teacher at SHS. I knew she would be a good candidate to interview for this topic as she has been at SHS as an Art Teacher for a while and would know things related to the art department.
She has been here for 20 years and she has been studying art and working in art careers her whole life.
Q1: Who paints the murals, how are they picked to do this and is there a qualification for this responsibility?
R1: "Typically the AP art students. They do it after The AP art exam in May."
Q2: How does the design get decided on and who gets a say in the design?
R2: "It is either that the senior class designs it or if the art students themselves pick it."
Q3: Throughout your time at SHS, have you overseen or been a part of the mural making process or is it student based only?
R3: "I have never overseen it, it is predominantly student based. The AP students work independently with the senior population."
Q4: In your opinion, how do these murals bring together our school and town community?
R4: "Art in general brings people together, just like music it is a universal language. It preserves memories, historical, cultural events."
Evan Kirk Interview
For my interview I tried to email a previous Art Director at Southington High School. He had been working at the position for years and would know a lot about the murals. Unfortunately I was never able to get in touch with him, and was forced to search elsewhere. I ended up interviewing Mr. Pendell. Mr. Pendell worked as an art teacher at Southington High School all the way back when they first created the new building. He was able to tell me all about the first ever mural and what it meant to that graduating class. He told me that the very first mural was painted during the 1983-84 senior class. Every student in his Advertising & Illustrating class had to paint something. Some kids painted their proms, others painted their class nights, and some students even painted self portraits. This mural specifically stood out to Mr. Pendell because it reflected real memories from the senior class rather than just popular trends. The reason the murals were so special to Mr. Pendell was because they became " the first time students were allowed to permanently display their art on a school surface". The murals gave students a way to express themselves and reflect on their senior year. Looking back at them lets us see the school’s history and the pop culture of each time period from the students’ point of view.
Benjamin Efendic Interview
I chose Mr. Aroian because he is our principal and he has been working at this school for over 20 years and he has a lot of knowledge about murals and what has gone into each of them and what makes each of them unique.
Most Important Quotes during it
Question 2 - What mural in the building means the most to you?
Mr. Aroian - “ Ill say maybe the one during 2020 during covid where there was so many challenges and I respect everything we drew since it displayed all of the challenges we went through.
Question 3 - Why do you think we should keep doing murals every school year?
Mr. Aroian - “ I think it is a time capsule. It reflects whats important to the graduating class the pop culture, the media, the people. “
Question 6 - Why should we celebrate murals for our 50 year celebration?
Mr. Aroian - “ I believe they are a glimpse of the past it reflects our past students and what was important to them. It makes me sad that some of the murals were lost in the accident that happened around 25 years ago. “
