Our Goal
We were given the task of celebrating Southington High Schools 50th Anniversary, and what could be more defining to a school than their athletics programs. We are looking to spread awareness about the impact of SHS sports past and the impact on student life.
Past
Mr. Joseph J. Fontana (right) was the very first Athletic Director to work at Southington High School. He has the namesake of the Southington High School Varsity Field and Turf, “Fontana Field”. For such a big accomplishment this man was a leader and an asset to have as the first A.D. that this school has ever seen. His involvement with high school athletics and education was well renowned and praised by many. He spent a total of 47 years in the schools program and is one of the most recognized figures from the past of SHS athletics.
Southington also has a strong history of winning and championships. One of the best examples of this is the school's softball program. In their 50 years of playing they have won 25 states championships. This is a huge accomplishment and highlights the best of Southington's athletics program.
At Southington High students strive to be the very best in their athletic fields. One example where we see this is the schools Outdoor Track and Field record wall. This has each track event for both the boys and girls, and lists the fastest time, longest jump, and even the farthest throw. Not only does it have these amazing achievements but it also incorporates the name and year the individual broke that record; and became the best Southington High School has ever seen. This is a great way for students to learn more about the past, and strive to make it onto the wall!
Student Impact
Physical - Over the last 50 years Southington sports has provided kids with an outlet to improve their physical health. By promoting discipline and commitment these programs have really helped athletes whether they are playing in college or just on the team to do what they love.
Social - The athletics program has not only helped kids improve physically but it also gives students a chance to connect with each other socially. The teams bring students of all different backgrounds, sizes and ages together and allow for plenty of opportunities for social growth.
Mental - As much as the athletics program values physical health and strength it also makes a point to improve athletes mental health as well. The teams make sportsmanship a great priority and it is displayed by teams winning sportsmanship awards that are nominated by referees and teams alike.
Our Interview With Mr. Risser
Even though we are celebrating the schools past it is important to recognize the people who are important to the school currently. After a great tenure as our Athletic Director, Mr. Risser is retiring this year.
