Southern Tier Land Conservancy Appoints Local Farmer Becca Rimmel to Board of Directors
BROOME COUNTY, NY – The Southern Tier Land Conservancy (STLC) has announced the appointment of Becca Rimmel, owner and operator of Bottomland Farms in Berkshire, NY, to its Board of Directors. Rimmel brings extensive experience in sustainable agriculture and land stewardship to the organization, which conserves lands and waters across Broome and Tioga Counties.
"Becca's commitment to biodiversity and sustainable farming practices aligns perfectly with our mission to protect the natural heritage of the Southern Tier," said Jason Shaw, President of STLC. "Her hands-on experience managing farmland while prioritizing ecological health will provide invaluable perspective as we work to conserve both working lands and wild spaces throughout our region."
Rimmel and her partner Bill established Bottomland Farms in 2016, starting with seven New Zealand rabbits and 40 chickens. The farm has since expanded while maintaining a focus on environmental stewardship. Their management practices include encouraging native plants, providing habitat for pollinators and wildlife, and making land-use decisions that prioritize long-term landscape health.
"We're thrilled to have someone join our board who understands firsthand the delicate balance between productive agriculture and environmental conservation," said Jeff Merrill, STLC Treasurer. "Becca's experience demonstrates that farming and conservation aren't mutually exclusive – they can and should work together to ensure the sustainability of our rural landscapes."
Beyond her farming operations, Rimmel works as a consultant for nonprofits, farmers markets, and food systems organizations. She also writes about sustainable agriculture practices and the connection between farming and conservation.
"I'm honored to join the Southern Tier Land Conservancy's board and contribute to protecting the lands that sustain our communities," said Rimmel. "As farmers, we see every day how healthy ecosystems support productive agriculture. Working with STLC allows me to help ensure that future generations can continue to farm, explore, and connect with these landscapes that define our region."
The Southern Tier Land Conservancy works to conserve natural areas, heritage sites, and farmland throughout Broome and Tioga Counties, ensuring the preservation of scenic beauty, recreational opportunities, and wild spaces while fostering connections between people and the land.
