By prioritizing responsible tourism and sustainability in environment and culture, Oni aims to create a harmonious tourism landscape that benefits both visitors and the local community while ensuring the long-term preservation and rejuvenation of its unique natural and heritage assets.
Safeguard the region's natural ecosystems and biodiversity, emphasizing responsible land use, and mitigating the carbon footprint of tourism activities. Implement eco friendly practices, waste reduction and recycling programs, as well as conserving water resources and promoting responsible water use.
1.1.1 Environmental Audit: Hire an outside firm to perform a thorough environmental impact assessment of potential tourism activities in Oni Municipality. Identify areas of concern, evaluate ecological sensitivity, and propose measures to minimize negative impacts, including a plan to offset carbon emissions generated by tourism activities.
1.1.2 Utilize Citizen Science Applications: Set up (populate), begin using, and promote the use of iNaturalist to help locals and visitors identify what species of plants and animals might be found in the region, and record what they have observed, therefore contributing to science.
1.1.3 Plan, Route, and Mark Official Trails: Making previously "unofficial" routes "official" and maintaining them will reduce trail misuse, allow for damages to be repaired and tracked, and for more widespread knowledge of such trails through mapping and wayfinding signage.
1.1.4 Waste Management Program: Design and implement a comprehensive waste management program tailored to handle tourism-related waste. Incorporate recycling initiatives, waste reduction campaigns, and proper disposal methods. Encourage local businesses, accommodations, and tourism operators to adopt recycling practices and reduce single-use plastics.
1.1.5 Tree Plantation and Reforestation Program: Involve local communities in tree and native planting initiatives to counteract the carbon footprint of tourism activities and enhance community engagement.
1.1.6 Sustainable Facilities Practices: Implement eco-friendly building incentives for tourist facilities, emphasizing energy-efficient solutions, water conservation measures and sustainable construction practices.
1.1.7 Biodiversity Conservation: Develop partnerships with environmental organizations to implement programs aimed at conserving local biodiversity, protecting natural habitats, and supporting wildlife conservation initiatives.
Efforts will be directed towards the preservation and promotion of Oni's rich cultural heritage. This includes the restoration and conservation of historic sites, monuments, and the encouragement of authentic cultural experiences, such as local art, crafts and traditions.
1.2.1 Cultural Heritage Restoration Program: Develop a targeted restoration project for key historic sites and monuments in collaboration with heritage conservation experts, local craftsmen, and relevant authorities. Identify and prioritize historic sites and monuments in need of restoration, then outline specific strategies for the preservation and restoration of these cultural assets. Enhance cultural venues such as museums, galleries, and historical sites through restoration projects, interactive exhibits, and multimedia installations, offering visitors immersive and engaging experiences that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Oni Municipality.
1.2.2 Digitization of Historical Archives and Inventories: Recording and digitizing databases, maps, and cultural heritage information ensures accessibility for research, education, monitoring, and promotion.
1.2.3 Establish Artisan Markets: Create programs to support local artisans and craftspeople, providing them with resources and opportunities to showcase and sell their products at the Tourist Information Center, events and other points of interest, where tourists can purchase handmade crafts and products as souvenirs.
1.2.4 Bring in Winemakers: Encourage winemakers or wine tasting rooms to relocate to Oni to promote and diversify an Oni winemaking culture.
1.2.5 Record Traditional Wellness Knowledge: Traditional healing methods and herbal remedies can be invaluable for visitors seeking alternative and holistic treatments. This expertise can be harnessed to create immersive experiences where travelers can learn about the healing properties of local plants and herbs, participate in workshops, and even engage in hands-on activities like spa treatments, cooking classes and herbal medicine preparation.
1.2.6 Cultural Heritage Preservation Fundraising: Raise funds during cultural events for heritage conservation and preservation projects.
1.2.7 Interactive Cultural Workshops: Create and conduct interactive workshops and demonstrations for visitors, allowing them to engage in local crafts, traditional cooking, and other cultural activities, fostering a deeper appreciation for the community's heritage.
1.2.8 Cultural Events and Festivals: Organize and promote more events that celebrate local traditions, folklore, and crafts, providing a platform for the community to showcase their cultural heritage.
Environmental and cultural initiatives will be supported through business and visitor education and promotion of responsible tourism behavior and ethical travel practices, raising awareness about the destination's sustainability initiatives. This encourages visitors to respect local customs, culture, and natural resources.
1.3.1 Create Visitor Awareness Signage: Develop messaging that promotes preservation and conservation messages and responsible travel throughout Oni. This includes a code of conduct and expectations on how to respect the local culture and "leave no trace" on the trails. Distribute this information through various channels, such as the interpretive signage or by publishing on the online website for easy access.
1.3.2 Install Interpretive Signage: Artisanally crafted wayfinding and interpretive signage at major points of interest around the destination are important not only for visitors, but help in reinforcing local geographic identity and put such locations "on the map".
1.3.3 Develop a Tourism Youth Educational Program: Develop a tourism education program in collaboration with schools and community centers. Include workshops, guided sessions, and information materials to raise awareness about sustainable tourism practices, preserving local biodiversity and local customs, and cultural heritage and sensitivity.
1.3.4 Networking with Sustainable Tourism Organizations: Establish partnerships with regional and international sustainable tourism organizations to gain insights, share best practices, and access resources for ongoing environmental and cultural heritage initiatives.
1.3.5 Sustainable Business Certification Program: Create a pledge and set of guidelines outlining eco-friendly tourism practices for local businesses, tour operators, and visitors. Introduce a business audit and recognition program for accommodations, restaurants, and tourism operators, designating and promoting businesses committed to sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
