Weeding Program
Annually, the school librarian will conduct an inventory of the school library collection and equipment. The inventory can be used to determine losses and remove damage or worn-
out materials which can then be considered for replacement. Likewise, textbooks shall be weeded out after 2-3 years depending on the use and need of the faculty. The inventory can also be used to deselect and remove materials that are no longer relevant to the curriculum or the interest to students. Additionally, librarians use C-U-D-C-U-P in assessing library materials for weeding out.
Weeding Criteria:
Library materials of all types may be candidates for weeding based on the following criteria:
· Currency
The content of library materials should be accurate and up to date. Materials that are superseded by newer, revised, or updated editions may be weeded.
· Usage
Low or no usage may be a factor in weeding decisions. The librarian may consult circulation statistics to determine viable candidates.
· Duplication
Due to space limitations, school librarians may weed out duplicate copies of library materials. Library staff will take into consideration the need to have more than one copy of a title on hand, especially for materials that are heavily used by the students and faculty.
· Completeness
Materials that are part of a multi-volume set of which the library does not have all volumes may be weeded.
· Uniqueness
The librarian will not weed materials that are considered unique and have enduring value for the school community.
· Physical condition
Materials that are badly deteriorated or damaged beyond reasonable preservation effort are subject to weeding out.
