Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, MHHS is excited to offer a
Dual Enrollment opportunity with MiraCosta College!
We will offer Agricultural Biology: Plant and Soil Science.
Students will earn credit for HORT 115 for the Fall semester, and for HORT 116 for the Spring semester.
The course will cover college-level material, and it is open to grades 9-12.
Students will earn credits at MHHS and MiraCosta College simultaneously. These grades are permanent on both transcripts.
The grade earned will be weighted on the MHHS transcript (extra point on the GPA, similar to an AP course).
The curriculum will be from MiraCosta College, but the class will be held on the MHHS campus, as part of the regular school day.
The is a year-long class, and would cover all 10 credits of life science needed for graduation and A-G (UC and Cal State) requirements.
The student/family do NOT pay anything to enroll in this class (or any other Dual Enrollment class).
If a student drops the class once the semester has begun, the drop/withdraw deadlines set by MiraCosta College would apply.
Students will need complete an application to MiraCosta College. After students have finished selecting courses for the 2026-27 school year, MHHS will reach out to students/families will the next steps.
HORT 115: Soil Science
Units: 3
Prerequisites: None
Acceptable for Credit: CSU, UC
Lecture 2 hours, laboratory 3 hours.
Course Typically Offered: Fall, Spring
This course examines the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil and covers soil conditions that restrict plant growth. Students learn to solve soil problems that may exist in the field, greenhouse, and landscape with a focus on sustainable practices. The course emphasizes problem-solving techniques that apply to Southern California soils, including fertility, salinity, pH, high calcium, specific toxicities, and physical problems. Students are required to participate in field labs and trips. C-ID AG-PS-128L.
HORT 116: Plant Science
Units: 4

This introductory course offers students an opportunity to learn the basic principles of plant science pertaining to food and ornamental plants. The course emphasizes plant morphology, anatomy and function, plant physiology, reproduction, biotic and abiotic environmental factors that impact plant growth and development, plant-soil-climate interrelationships, plant taxonomy and nomenclature, and plant diversity and adaptations. Learning activities include plant studies in the field, greenhouse, and landscape. Students are required to attend field labs and field trips. C-ID AG-PS-104, AG-PS-106L.
