At the beginning of each semester a Mandatory Orientation will be held to provide students with enrollment status (Course cancellations, full, acceptance, etc), and to provide important information for successfully completing their Dual Enrollment course. An email reminder will be sent to those students who have successfully completed all steps to apply for Palomar College and the Dual Enrollment paper application in May (for the Fall semester) or December (for the Spring semester). Mandatory Orientation for Fall 2025 will be held on Thursday, Aug 21st at student lunch in the Theater. Palomar Fall 25 Semester starts the week of Aug 25th!
Work Experience Orientation only will be Fri, Aug 22th at student lunch in the Theater.
Once you have been approved for the Palomar course, which students will receive at the Dual Enrollment Orientation, please complete the following steps:
STEP 1: Register for MyPalomar (Student Record System) to login into your Palomar account, view your current and past courses, final grades, email, etc. Your Palomar email is located on the Welcome tab of MyPalomar. Please include your full name and Palomar ID number in all email communication with Palomar College. Check your email daily! Here is a tutorial for MyPalomar
STEP 2: Create your Canvas account (Learning management system). Canvas will be the platform where you will view all your course materials, submit Palomar email assignments and communicate with your professor. All students are required to use this platform. Here is a tutorial for Canvas. You will get access to Canvas on the starting date of your course (or 1 day before, depending on your professor). Students will use their Palomar College ID and Palomar email address to access course content/classroom meetings.
STEP 3: Register for SMHS Dual Enrollment Google Classroom. Students will receive the Google Classroom code at the Mandatory Orientation meeting. Please note, this will be the main source of communication with SMHS so please make sure to check Google Classroom frequently and ensure you keep the notification status on to receive all notices. Students are highly required to add their parent/guardian to the Google Classroom.
STEP 4: Consistently stay in contact with your student's counselor, Mrs. Simpson or Ms. Heidi, about your course if you have any questions.
STEP 5: Pick up textbooks at the SMHS library. Students will need the textbook to complete the course.
STEP 6: Stay in constant communication with your Palomar professor and check your Palomar email daily. Access Palomar resources listed below if you find you need assistance in your course.
STEP 7: Reminder your Palomar course will be posted to your SMHS transcript and is permanent, try your best!
What if I submitted my Dual Enrollment application and have not heard back?
Once you submit your application please follow up with Ms. Heidi Harris in the Future Center to ensure your application is complete. After this step is completed, you must monitor your Palomar email frequently for important information from your professor.
Dual Enrollment courses require constant communication with the college professor.
Dual Enrollment courses are college courses, therefore you will experience the college expectations of advocating and being in the know regarding your course which can be done with constant communication with your professor. Check their course syllabus to determine communication expectations.
Be aware of the level of maturity for Dual Enrollment courses.
Dual Enrollment courses are a great way to understand the college process and the concepts of developing good balance and time management between academics, sports and college level courses. You will be held accountable to Palomar attendance and grading policies, including all course deadlines and syllabi due dates.
How can I drop a Dual Enrollment course?
If you find you need to drop your Dual Enrollment course, first be mindful of the important deadlines and drop before the penalty deadline. If you drop after the no-notation deadline, you will get a mark of a W (Withdrawal) or FW (Failed Withdrawal) on your official transcript which could potentially affect your academic or financial aid standing with Palomar. Please email your school counselor, Mrs. Simpson (areli.simpson@smusd.org) and Ms. Heidi (heidi.harris@smusd.org) ASAP if you would like to drop.
