SL - Standard Level

Choreography

Choreography is the art of making dances. SL students are required to create two dances to submit to the IB organization for assessment. The dances need to be a total of eight minutes for two dances.

Choreographers must be able to articulate the purpose of their dance, for instance, "I made this dance because I loved the music and wanted to explore the various rhythms within the music."

Dancers will be given instruction on how to use the basic elements of dance so that they can create a valid piece of art.

Performance

Performance is the ability to share with an audience the emotion and physical intent of the choreographer.

Students learn dances and perform them for assessment. One or two dances will be recorded and sent to the IB organization for review.

The dances must be choreographed by a teacher or guest artist.

World Investigation Research

The World Investigation is a compare & contrast research paper.

The students will compare and contrast a dance they are familiar with to a World dance they are unfamiliar with. For instance the dancers may research the history of Hip Hop, familiar and compare/contrast to Japanese Butoh, unfamiliar.

This paper will start their Junior year and will be finished their Senior year. The paper will be submitted to the IB organization for review.

The SL dance student will write up to 1,600 words.
