HL - Higher Level

HL Dance is similar to SL dance but HL students do a little more of everything...

Choreograph

Choreography is the art of making dances. HL students are required to create three dances to submit to the IB organization for assessment. The dances need to be a total of 8-15 minutes for three dances.

Choreographers must be able to articulate the purpose of their dance, for instance, "I made this dance because I loved the music and wanted to explore the various rhythms within the music."

Dancers will be given instruction on how to use the basic elements of dance so that they can create a valid piece of art.

Performance

Performance is the ability to share with an audience the emotional and physical intent of the choreographer.

Students learn dances and perform them for assessment.  Two-three dances will be recorded and sent to the IB organization for review. A total of 6-9 minutes for all dances.

The dances must be choreographed by a teacher or guest artist, recorded and submitted to the IB organzaition for review.

World Investigation

The World Investigation is a compare & contrast research paper.

The students will compare and contrast a dance they are familiar with to a World dance they are unfamiliar with. For instance the dancers may research the history of Hip Hop, familiar and compare/contrast to Japanese Butoh, unfamiliar. In addition, the dancers will compare an actual performance of the two dances. For example, they will review a Butoh dance Youtube video and discuss the elements of dance as well as a Hip Hop dance performance and compare the same elements. How do the performances use the elements differently or similarly?

This paper will start their Junior year and will be finished in their Senior year. The paper will be submitted to the IB organization for review.

The HL dance student will write up to 2,500 words.
