Middle School band students should contact their directors regarding absences by email.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO EMPHASIZE THE FOLLOWING POINTS:

Not every absence is excused. For a complete listing of our absence policy, please see our HS Band Handbook above.
It is important that your student be present for rehearsal as much as possible!! We understand that things will come up which are beyond your control, however, some absences can be avoided with proper planning. Marching band is very much a TEAM activity. When one student is absent, it does affect the performance ability of the students around them on the field. Please keep this in mind when scheduling appointments and with all excused absences.

One of the proudest traditions in St. Marys, OH is the St. Marys All Brass Band. Affectionately referred to as “SMABB” by locals, this ensemble performs at all home football games, as well as numerous local events and parades. Throughout the band’s history, the St. Marys All Brass Band has performed nationally at numerous locations, including Richmond, Orlando, Philadelphia, Chicago, Indianapolis and San Antonio.

Students who are principal woodwind musicians learn a brass instrument for marching band during the summer following their 8th grade year. The band performs a different show for each home football game every fall, as well as several parades and events throughout the year. Students can audition for different auxiliary positions in the band such as field commander, drum major, dance team and majorette.

The “Pride of St. Marys” is one of St. Marys oldest and most beloved institutions.

The centerpiece of the St. Marys Band Program are its concert bands. At the conclusion of the football season, students are individually auditioned and placed in either Concert Band or Symphonic Band. Students attend sectionals and rehearsals both in and out of the school day. Both groups compete in OMEA Solo and Ensemble and Large Group Adjudicated Events, and perform several concerts through the school year. The ensembles routinely receive superior and excellent ratings at OMEA Adjudicated Events.

Pep band is a voluntary extra-curricular ensemble that performs at home basketball games during the winter months, performing mostly popular music. Seated next to the student section, the pep band is integral in creating a true home-court advantage for the Riders. There are dress-up days, theme days, and crazy days.

Jazz band is an extra-curricular ensemble that meets once per week on Wednesdays. Different popular forms of music are explored such as jazz, swing, be-bop, fusion, rock, latin, etc. Skills such as improvisation, comping, and swing styling are taught. Students who perform on rhythm section instruments such as piano, bass, guitar or drum set have a chance to perform on those in this ensemble.
