Mr. Riley C. Robey graduated from Capital University in May of 2014, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. While attending Capital, Mr. Robey studied under Mr. James Swearingen and was the Principal Tubist in the Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Barry E. Kopetz.

Mr. Robey is entering his sixth year as a music educator and his first year as the Director of Bands at St. Marys City Schools. Mr. Robey teaches instrumental band 5-12, as well as Jazz Band, Pep Band, music technology and beginning guitar class. He is also active as a brass private lessons instructor and participates in multiple community bands including the Worthington Civic Band and Winds of Ohio, performing at the 2018 OMEA Professional Development Conference.

Previous to employment at St. Marys, Mr. Robey served as the 5th-12th grade Director of Bands at Grove City Christian School. He conducted the Jr. High and High School concert bands, earning superior ratings at district and state OMEA Large Group Contest as well as leading the marching band to numerous achievements within the MSBA competitive circuit. Before GCHS, Mr. Robey began his career as the K-12th grade Director of Music Education at First Academy where he taught all levels of band, choir and general music. Under his direction, the high school concert band began competing and earned some of the highest ratings at the FMEA Music Performance Assessment; he also started and led the first school pep band and doubled band enrollment during his time there.

Mr. Robey is excited to be a new member of the St. Marys community. He is motivated to build upon the standard of excellence and traditions set within the music department and plans to continue advancing the band at all levels of the program.

Madeline (Sawmiller) Frankenhauser was born and raised in St. Marys, Ohio. After graduating from Memorial High School, she attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio and completed her Bachelor of Music degree in 2005. Shortly after graduating, she married her college sweetheart and the two moved to North Carolina to pursue teaching careers.

Mrs. Frankenhauser served as the band and choir director in Taboro, NC for seven years and also gained experience teaching beginning band, middle school band, choir, and general music while in NC. After the birth of their two sons, the Frankenhausers began looking for jobs closer to their families in Ohio.

In 2014, she accepted the Associate Director of Bands position for St. Marys City Schools which offered her the chance to move back to her home town. Here, she now co-teaches instrumental band in all grade levels 5-12. She and her husband have settled back into Ohio and enjoy spending time with their families.

Most recently, Mrs. Frankenhauser graduated from the American Band College during the summer of 2018 with her Masters in Music Education degree from Central Washington University. She co-directs the St. Marys Area Community Band and is the Youth Music Director at St. Pauls United Church of Christ in St. Marys.

Dane newlove

Percussion Instructor

Dane Newlove retired following the 2012-13 school year after a thirty-year career in education, the last twenty-seven as Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Chair for the St. Marys City Schools. Bands under his direction performed at national-level events such as the Citrus Bowl Parade, Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Kentucky Derby Pegasus Parade; as well as state level concert band adjudicated events.

He is currently the Director of Adjudicated Event Materials and Awards for the Ohio Music Education Association, and teaches part time as percussion specialist for the Coldwater and St. Marys City School systems in West Central Ohio, where he coaches small group sectionals, soloists and ensembles, and is responsible for instrument maintenance and ordering. Percussion soloists and ensembles under his direction consistently received superior ratings at both the Junior High and High School levels, many in the highest level of Class A, and are frequent participants in honor bands across the area.

Newlove is a member of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity; the American School Band Directors Association, and the Percussive Arts Society. He is also an active performer as a percussionist in the Lima Symphony Orchestra, Lima Marimba Ensemble, Unclouded Day Vocal Ensemble, and as principal percussionist for the Old Crown Brass Band from Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Dane is also the founder and co-director of the St. Marys Area Community Band. He also presents frequent percussion clinics and band critiques for bands and music educators across Northern and West Central Ohio. Dane is a published arranger of percussion ensembles for young performers through Per-Mus Publications of Columbus, OH, and is an artist/performer endorser for Innovative Percussion, Inc.

Kelsey burke

Majorette Instructor

Kelsey Burke is our Majorette Advisor. She has been twirling baton since she was seven years old, and she was a majorette in the St. Marys All-Brass Band when she was in high school. One of her favorite band memories is marching at the state semi-final game in 2004.

After spending five years in Chicago, Kelsey moved back to St. Marys with her husband, Jonathan, to raise their children closer to family. Kelsey and Jonathan now have three boys, Drew, Landon, and Milo. Kelsey is also a Financial Advisor at Prudential. She has been assisting local families in retirement and estate planning since she moved back to town in 2014. Kelsey joined the SMABB staff as the majorette advisor one year later in 2015, and she has enjoyed the opportunity to develop leadership and a passion for the arts in our students.

Cory Canan is currently in his eleventh year teaching grades 4-12 music, band, and choir at New Knoxville Schools. He conducts the jazz, pep, marching, and concert bands. Cory received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Ohio Northern University in 2006, and a Masters of Music degree from Kent State University in 2013. When not at school, Cory can be found either at the movie theatre or watching his nieces and nephew at any and most of their sporting events.
