Smith College uses Zoom Phone for its telecom services. Smith faculty and staff can make and receive phone calls on their Smith-assigned computer using the Zoom application (the same one used for meetings) or a Zoom-compatible desk phone. Zoom Phone offers flexibility for those working remotely.
Phones are also located in academic buildings and common areas across campus, and in each residence hall near the main entrance for local calls and emergencies.
If you are a new employee and would like a Smith telephone extension, contact ITS to receive a Zoom Phone account and phone number. If there is already a phone at your workstation, please reach out to ITS to confirm it is assigned to you, or to let us know if you don't need it.
Employees with a Smith phone number can make and receive calls through the Zoom desktop app, a physical desk phone, or the Zoom mobile app (Note: using the Zoom Mobile app on a personal device is completely optional).
See Zoom Phone for more information, instructions on using the app, and helpful links.
For instructions on using your physical desk phone, see Yealink Phone.
To learn how to customize your preferences, including updating your business hours, choosing which devices ring, and setting up how unanswered calls are handled, see Zoom Phone Settings.
When placing calls from Smith phones on campus:
Dial the 4-digit extension for Smith phone numbers
Dial the area code + phone number for off-campus calls (there is no need to dial 8 or 9 for an external line).
To reach Campus Safety, dial x5555 for emergencies and x2490 for non-emergencies.
Voicemail can be accessed through the Zoom app, web portal, and a physical phone. The audio file and transcription will also be sent to your Smith email inbox.
For complete instructions on creating voicemail greetings and accessing your messages, see Voicemail.
