Intro to GenAI

What is GenAI?

Generative AI is a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that can create new content, such as text and images. AI models (systems) are trained on large amounts of data and generate content based on the patterns they learn. GenAI excels at understanding, summarizing, and predicting human language.

Where should I start?

Familiarize yourself with the data security guidelines before exploring the AI tools available at Smith. To learn about what types of data are safe to use with AI tools, see Data Security.
When using AI for Smith work, use Smith-approved tools and make sure you're logged in to your Smith account. Just like your Google email or Drive documents, your data is private and secure.
Google Gemini, a GenAI tool with a chat interface, is available to all Smith employees and is a great tool for getting started. See our Gemini page for detailed instructions on accessing and using Gemini.

Data Security

Not all data is safe for AI! Know Smith's rules about which AI tools can be used with Smith data.

Risks of Misinformation

Information Reliability: AI-generated content may be misleading, fabricated, or false. These errors are often called “hallucinations”.
Importance of Validation: Always verify AI-generated content for accuracy and completeness before use and check for bias. Never publish or rely on AI content without human review.

Cybersecurity & AI

Generative AI has made it easier to create sophisticated phishing emails and deepfakes and more difficult to differentiate what's legitimate and what's not. See the Cybersecurity page for more information on how to stay safe, including how to recognize a phishing attempt and report phishing.
