Engineering Fair Projects
Engineering Fair Projects
When you think of a high school science fair, you might picture tri-fold cardboard displays, baking soda volcanoes, or testing which paper towel is the most absorbent. Erase that image from your mind.
What is Regeneron ISEF—the International Science and Engineering Fair? Think of it as the Olympic Games or the World Cup for young innovators. Every May, about 1,700 of the brightest high school minds from over 70 countries gather to showcase groundbreaking independent research and engineering designs. We are talking about students building actual working prosthetics, programming new artificial intelligence models, or designing novel water purification systems."
Why This Class is Uniquely Positioned
"Because this is an engineering class, you actually have a massive head start. A lot of people think ISEF is just for pure lab science—like biology or chemistry. But ISEF has 21 specific categories, and some of the most competitive ones are pure engineering. We're talking about Robotics and Intelligent Machines, Embedded Systems, Materials Science, and Engineering Mechanics.
Instead of just writing a theoretical paper, as engineers, you follow the Engineering Design Process. You identify a problem, design a prototype, test it, fail, iterate, and build a solution that works. If you've ever wanted to invent something that solves a frustrating real-world issue, ISEF is the ultimate arena to prove your design works."
The Stakes & The Journey
"So why put in the work? First, the rewards are life-changing. There are millions of dollars in prizes, with Grand Awards ranging from $500 up to a $75,000 top prize. Beyond the money, having 'ISEF Finalist' on your resume is a massive green flag for elite engineering universities like MIT, Stanford, or Caltech, as well as future tech employers.
But you don't just sign up online. You have to earn your spot. The journey begins right here at the local level. You compete in our local or regional school fair. If your engineering project wins there, you advance to the State fair. Win at State, and the organizers will fly you out, all expenses paid, to the international final to compete on the global stage."
Next Steps & Wrap-Up
"Great engineering projects aren’t built overnight—the most successful ones take months of drafting, prototyping, and testing.
Throughout this semester, we can use our class design time to start brainstorming ideas, finding mentors, and sketching prototypes. Who knows? The next world-changing patent could start right here in this room. Thanks guys, let's get to work!"
