The violin is the highest pitched instrument in the string family. The violin is no harder to play than any other instrument; however, if the student does not have an above average coordination ability I might suggest another instrument.
Things to consider in choosing to play the violin:
Student is able to demonstrate some dexterity in the left hand, independently moving each finger. The left fingers are used to press the strings to produce different notes while the right hand plucks the strings or uses the bow.
Reading skills are above average
Work habits are strong, and achievement is high
Materials needed for the violin will be:
Instrument and bow- a student should be correctly sized at a music store. An incorrectly sized violin can be very uncomfortable and difficult for the student to play. Parents/Guardians may use this guide to size at home. NOTE: USE EXTREME CAUTION WITH INSTRUMENTS BOUGHT ONLINE - often these instruments are cheaper and will frustrate your student rather than inspire.
Common violin sizes for elementary students are 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4. 4/4 or full size violins are recommended only for students who are of above average height for their age.
Shoulder rest (or sponge/washcloth)
