Alexandra Eala's quest to become the first Filipina to capture a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour title ended in heartbreak as she fell to Australia's Maya Joint. A thrilling final of the 2025 Lexus Eastbourne Open in Great Britain on Saturday marked a dramatic end to her historic run.
People were sent on an emotional rollercoaster. Just as when Eala was surging ahead, Joint responded with vengeance, flipping the script to take a 4-2 lead. Yet Eala refused to back down, levelled the score and set the stage for a dramatic tiebreaker that had everyone on the edge of their seats.
The 20-year-old’s fierce showdown against Joint lasted two hours and 26 minutes and ultimately ended in 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (10-12), evidently showing how they battled for control of the match.
"It’s my first WTA final. It’s a big deal for me and for my country because it’s historic,” said Eala, fighting back tears during the trophy presentation.
Joint, another rising star in women’s tennis, started the match with sharp focus, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead, seemingly in control of the baseline exchanges, but Eala dug deep, managing to break serve in the ninth game to narrow the gap to 5-4.
However, the Australian held her nerve and secured the opening set with a timely counter-break.
Eala turned the tables in her favor in the second set, unleashing a barrage of punishing forehands and a newfound consistency in her serve, dismantling Joint's game and snatching the second set, 6-1.
Momentum seemed to be on Eala's side; her growing confidence was palpable, while unforced errors began to frustrate her Australian opponent.
In the final act, tension reached fever pitch with Eala holding four match points in the extended breaker, but Joint remained cool as ice under pressure, saving them all with breathtaking shot-making.
Finally, the Australian seized the title, winning the breaker at 12-10, in a moment that showcased the incredible poise and promise of both competitors.
The Eastbourne final marked the youngest combined age of finalists at the tournament since 1981.
Despite the heartbreak, Eala's impressive journey from the qualifiers to the championship match showcased the poise, power, and potential that have long been anticipated.
Her breakthrough in Eastbourne may not have ended with a trophy, but it marks the beginning of Eala's rise on grass and on the WTA Tour.
