INTRAMURALS 2025:
Ballesteros awaits finalist foe, Villacorta anchors championship
12 September, 2025 | By Gianina Paguio
7th Grader Prodigy Yñigo Ballesteros overruled every opponent in his way to the championships—if he even needed to try—in the High School Boys Table Tennis match of the Intramurals 2025, yesterday. Awaiting the foe to face him in the finals, the remaining paddlers must now decide if they truly want to win the semifinals.
In an earlier game, Freshman Lance Vargas and Grade 12 Senior Gabriel Castillo faced each other for the quarterfinals, and despite being at the end of each other’s brackets, Vargas claimed an impressive 3-0 victory.
Although Castillo was able to counter Vargas’ topspin serves disguised as backspin—prompting Coach Joseph Ochoa to say:
“Tirang Yñigo ‘yun ah!”
His weakness in backhand skills allowed Vargas to smoothly finish the game and enter the semis.
Meanwhile, the gold medal was long declared for Venice Jane Villacorta in a well-dominated 11-0, 11-5, 11-0 match as she finished off Charlene Angelica Francisco.
Francisco couldn’t return Villacorta’s serves, basically giving away the championship to the freshman.
