Alas Pilipinas, determined to come back strong in spite of being sent back inches from bronze, by a strict three-set loss from Indonesia, 19-25, 17-25, and 17-25, just missing the podium by a hair, at the 2025 SEA V.League Leg 1 on Sunday, Candon City Arena in Ilocos Sur.
The team managed to push the scores during their fight with Cambodia in a five-set battle, leveling their win-loss rate by 2-1, before succumbing to Indonesia, 2-2.
Alas had the momentum of a three-set straight win against Vietnam, who placed bronze on the platform however, had difficulties maintaining their drive.
“The team needs to learn from their mistakes, their errors,” Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) said in a statement.
Thailand finished with streaks of gold, 3-1 win-loss (2.500), Indonesia won silver, 3-1 record (2.000), while the Philippines lost bronze to Vietnam with just a 1.143 - 0.750 set ratio distance.
Outside hitter, Leo Ordiales, contributed to the team’s manifestation of skill. Ordiales was honored as the best Opposite Hitter throughout their tournament.
Meanwhile, veteran key player, Marck Espejo, suffered injuries during their opening matches back in the 2025 AVC Men’s Volleyball National Cup, causing the young set of players trouble when it comes to court-strategies and defense.
The rookies wish a fast recovery on their star players, just enough time before the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship–but until then, the team would have to stick to their placements and rotation.
Team captain Kim Malabunga hopes to “regroup and recalibrate” for their next tournament.
As such, Alas Pilipinas aims for a comeback and a more organized play in the second leg, starting July 16 to 20 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
