International Lightning Safety Day underscores danger mitigation
28 June, 2025 | By Eumij A. Mariano
To raise awareness on preventive measures when lightning strikes, the world marks June 28 as the International Lightning Safety Day yearly.
Lightning may strike instantly amid thunderstorms, and any inattention in taking actions might result in severe injuries. Consequently, it is vital to have insights on what to do if lightning occurs.
According to the National Lightning Safety Council, seek a safe shelter immediately if the sky appears ominous or you hear thunder. Once you’re inside, stay away from electrically-conductive objects as these can be hazardous.
In addition to that, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised the public to avoid open spaces and vehicles when lightning hits. Have a plan and get inside quickly if you find yourself in an open area.
If someone is struck by lightning, they may need immediate medical help. They do not carry an electrical charge and are harmless.
Keep in mind the saying, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” As lightning strikes typically result in several casualties, it is necessary to be aware about the perils of lightning to minimize the potential risks of lightning.
