Fluctuating Catastrophe
By Eumij Mariano
Will you let our natural resources perish in the blink of an eye?
Entire planet is drifting in a climatic crisis. As time passes, this shift is undeniable and evident with our daily weather patterns. Its destructive effects, which jeopardize the globe, emphasizes the critical need to address climate change.
Polluted air, extreme weather, and rising sea levels are just a few of the outcomes of the world’s worsening climate. We are experiencing abrupt shifts in temperature that undermine human life on earth.
Human activities such as burning fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions, and excessive usage of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) contribute to this global concern. Thus rendering our present system unsustainable because factories and urbanization contribute to carbon emissions which worsen the environment. As a result, our daily activities can cause extreme heat, pollution, flooding, and landslides, all of which have a detrimental effect on our daily lives and livelihoods.
With this, what future awaits us with climate change? As climate change continues, global warming remains rising.
According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), mean temperature in every part of the Philippines is expected to rise by 1.8°C to 2.2°C in 2050. Its adverse impacts are evident since it produces rapid fluctuations in world average temperature, triggering a variety of unprecedented environmental challenges. Temperature variations can cause heatstroke, asthma, influenza, and skin cancer which can have an impact on human health.
In line with that, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises the public to take climate actions to enhance air quality. The public is recommended to shift to cleaner energy sources. We can accomplish this by segregating garbage, reducing the use of CFCs sprays, and utilizing energy-efficient alternatives. Proper garbage disposal and segregation when practiced properly can be an effective action on minimizing climate change.
Aside from those, we can plant more trees and avoid burning trash. These practices may be simple steps but they represent a significant stride for a change. Avoid burning plastics and other household wastes as they contribute to air pollution and ozone layer depletion. Be an advocate and speak out for climate action and ways to minimize its adverse repercussions. When we start to take these simple steps together, we can avoid the irreparable effects of climate change in the near future.
As we go for a greener environment, we can mitigate the effects of climate change. Every small step towards climate catastrophe response counts. We can all help in minimizing its impacts by starting on our households. This climate disaster that we are experiencing is a waking call of nature. As the youth, we got to do this for ourselves, for our own sake, and for our own future.
