In a world where emotional struggles are increasingly common, technology has found a way to listen. Artificial Intelligence (AI), once known only for calculations and automation, is now entering deeply in the vast realm of human emotions.
One of the most notable examples is Replika, an AI chatbot designed to simulate emotional connection and provide mental health support. As many users confide their fears, anxieties, and loneliness to a digital machine, Replika challenges traditional ideas of empathy, companionship, and emotional care in the next level.
With the recent testing of the researchers in Grade 12 of St. Mary’s College of Baliuag, Inc., looking for a way to explore how AI chatbots like Replika could support emotional well-being, particularly in educational settings where stress and anxiety are common. They have concluded something that is much more interesting with AI in technology.
Grade 11 students served as the primary participants in the study, interacting with the Replika chatbot for five (5) days. The researchers observed how the students expressed their emotions, stress levels and even the ways in which the AI have provided support or guidance all through the intervention.
After the five-day period, data analysis showed a measurable reduction in stress levels, with average scores decreasing from a pre-test value of 2.16 to a post-test value of 2.00. These findings suggest that only for five days AI chatbots like Replika can offer meaningful support in promoting emotional well-being among students.
While the study shows a decrease in stress levels of Grade 11 students of St. Mary’s College of Baliuag, Inc. Traditional mental health support remains essential, as they have the professional expertise, understanding, and the ability to handle emotional issues that AI cannot fully replicate.
Replika may offer fast and quick answers with non-judgemental responses for our stress everyday, but they lack the emotions and judgement for us to learn and grow.
Given the fast paced nature of society, wherein many chatbots replicate the human emotion, there is one that they cannot fully replicate and that is empathy.
