Antarctica, Earth’s untouched haven, but for how long? It is in my opinion that the scientific protection that Antarctica was given in 1959, is a fleeting agreement that may soon be under threat.
Glacial melting has been a severe problem in the world, raising and salting our oceans. We've all heard the same old story before. However, how long has it been since you gave it any real thought? How long has it been since you were concerned and cared about it? I have observed that “climate change” and “global warming” has just become an everyday truth that has been accepted as a simple fact of life.
Another constant in our world, another fact of the age pushed to the side.
Well it isn't. Maybe we have all gotten so numb to hearing about some ecological disaster in a far-off land, or maybe even in our own country. A “ganito lang talaga” mindset, because what else have we known? I find that more and more, these topics are not talked about, accepted, and uncared.
Who’s to say that if there was a sudden discovery, say, of natural resources so abundant that some signers of the Antarctic Treaty would be more than willing to violate international law? Now, understand that the melting is revealing previously unseen parts of the continent, on the most unseen part of the globe.
Even if it won’t, is it not true that we are already on track to have our glaciers melted by the end of this century? So who will speak for the squawks of the flightless birds? Is this yet another ecological disaster that we are living through? We have gotten too complacent in our acts and in our thoughts.
