Communicating effectively, respectfully, and compassionately with patients and families including obtaining informed consent for tests and/or procedures is a core physician skill and an entrustable professional activity for entering residency.
For many reasons, communicating with kids and families is typically both more fun and more challenging compared to communicating with adult patients. If you have questions about how to approach a difficult conversation, please talk to talk with your supervising physician!

AAP Change Talk. Free role playing simulation where you take the role of a healthcare provider and engage in a practice conversation with a virtual mother and her child. Through the conversation, you learn to apply Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to help them identify motivation for change, supporting them to implement changes in their diet, screen time, and exercise. Change Talk is available online and on several mobile device platforms. It includes three modules with self-assessment quizzes, interactive patient simulations that provide players with real-time feedback on their patient interactions and opportunities to try new approaches.
Module completion and achievement of a score of at least 80% on the post-test are required during Navigating Family-Physician Conversations in the Pediatric Setting elective. Students completing this module early, should consider taking screenshots of their scores. Although going through the modules a 2nd time would also be helpful.
