While learning will take primarily in conjunction with patient care and via individual study, the Department of Pediatrics offers a number of educational conferences which students are either encouraged or required to attend. Attendance of conferences specific to the course or clerkship "mini-elective" a student is currently on take priority. All students are invited to clerkship academic half day, pediatric noon conference, grand rounds/professional development sessions, and Pediatric Research Colloquium. Fourth year students are additionally invited to the intern academic half day. See calendar for general conference topics +/-zoom links, and individual site overviews for specialty specific conferences.
A large number of our department conferences are held virtually. We recommend students attend these with their team. We additionally have McGowen conference room reserved as an alternative place for students to join in.
Please see individual site overviews
Held weekly 1-4 on Wed or Friday
Clerkship students are required and all other learners invited to attend
Our goal is to utilize shared time for interactive activities and clinical case discussions. All participants having at least a minimum topic familiarity makes the group experience more valuable for everyone.
Recommended individual study materials, individual readiness quizzes, and additional resources are included with all sessions
To get most benefit, we encourage students to complete modules covering core skills early on in the clerkship and to match completion of knowledge modules to their clinical setting. As an example we would recommend completing the nephrology individual study module prior to/during orange team and/or nephrology "mini-elective" even of the in-person session is not schedule until later on in the clerkship. We deliberately schedule sessions covering core clinical skills early on in the clerkship with focus shifting to clinical knowledge later in the clerkship
We and our volunteer presenters welcome feedback regarding both the prework and the in-person sessions and make ongoing improvements.
