Transition from Nursery to Primary One plays a key role in how well children settle as they start their next exciting chapter in school. At St Mark's Primary, we appreciate transitions can be a daunting time, therefore we ensure we go above and beyond to support our new children and their families. From enrolments to nursery visits, induction and enhanced transition visits we ensure we are getting it right for every child in order for them to feel safe, secure and ready to start school.
Please see below timeline with further information if your child is starting Primary 1.
If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Hughes (gw10hugheskirsty5@glow.sch.uk).
Primary One enrolment usually takes place from the first week back in the January term. If you have any queries regarding enrolment, please do not hesitate to contact our school office.
Enrolment
Children normally start school in August if their 5th birthday falls before 1 March of the following year. If your child attends the nursery of your catchment school don't assume that they will be automatically transferred. You must register them as normal. It’s only the parent the child ordinarily stays with who is authorised to register them, this includes the guardian or any person who is liable to maintain or has parental responsibilities.
You must identify the catchment school for your permanent home address by using the school catchment checker. This will show you information on your denominational and non-denominational catchment schools for primary and secondary. If you have any difficulty in identifying your catchment school please email us at edsuppserv.helpline@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
To register your child for school you should complete South Lanarkshire Council's online Primary school registration form. This can be found here: Enrolling your child for school - South Lanarkshire Council
January - Child Enrolment (Please see above for further information)
January - A welcome email from our Transition Coordinator will be sent to all parents/ carers acknowledging the enrolment of your child.
February - Our Transition Coordinator will phone all new Primary 1 parents to discuss the next steps in your child's induction journey.
March/April - Our Transition Coordinator will arrange visits with your child's nursery. These visits are especially important in establishing positive relationships with your child. These visits also provide opportunities for our Transition Coordinator and your child's Early Years Practitioner to discuss your child and any key information that may support their transition to school.
May/June - Induction events will take place for both new children and families.
June - Enhanced Transition visits may be arranged to support your child's final stages of transition.
Our Primary 1 induction events play a key role in supporting children and their families when transitioning into school. These events usually take place in May/June and provide children with the opportunity to meet new friends, meet staff and become familiar with their classroom, school environment and routines.
