WOOD PREPARATION TECHNIQUES
Most products that are made from wood require a finish to be applied. Applying a finish to a product will not only make it look better but make it last longer. Before applying a finish to a product, its surfaces must be cleaned up and smoothed down. This basic preparation is a very important stage of the finishing process, and although sometimes it is tempting to rush this stage of the process, a poorly prepared surface will be highlighted and becomes more noticeable once a finish is applied.
This section will look at the various preparation techniques that can and should be followed to ensure that a smooth surface, free from defects, is achieved ready for a high-quality finish to be applied.
A well-prepared surface should have:
all pencil marks removed
no evidence of glue marks
no scratch marks from abrasives
all imperfections that have been left after machining the wood removed
FINISHING TECHNIQUES
Surface finished are applied to wooden products for two main reasons, to protect the wood and to enhance the appearance of the wood. There are many finished available and it's important that the correct finish is selected. When deciding on a suitable finish for a product, consideration must be given to the following factors:
what level of protection is needed? Moisture, dirt, heat, sun, knocks and/or scratches?
Safety - Is the finish child-friendly?
Where will the prduct be used? Interior and/or exterior?
What is the expected lifespan of the product?
Mus the grain be seen?
Surface sheen required - high or low gloss?
Drying time of applied finish
Ease of application and clean up
Number of coats required to achieve a quality finish
