SAFETY IN THE WORKSHOP
When working in a workshop environment, it is extremely important that everyone acts with Health & Safety in mind. Carelessness and misbehaviour can very quickly and easily cause an accident to happen which could ultimately result in someone being injured or equipment being damaged. Due to the many potential dangers in a workshop, it is important that the following rules are followed:
Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment, for example, goggles, gloves, an apron, etc, for the activity you are undertaking.
Remove, tuck in, or tie any loose items including hair, tie and jewellery.
Never run or fool around in the workshop and remember to carry tools safely.
Keep the workshop tidy and free from any tripping hazards.
Keep hands away from moving parts and, when using a chisel, you should always keep both hands behind the cutting edge.
Only use equipment and machinery if you have received training and have permission to use it.
Report all accidents, breakages and faults to your teacher, no matter how minor.
Only use tools for their intended purpose.
Never leave a machine unattended when the machine is running.
Ensure that any guards fitted to machines are in good condition and are in place prior to using machinery.
Ensure any work that is to be machined is secured in place prior to turning the power on.
Know how to switch the power off to machines and where the emergency stop buttons are located throughout the workshop.
