COURSE ASSESSMENT STRUCTRUE
The course assessment structure comprises two components, the practical activity and the question paper. The practical activity will involve manufacturing a project set by the SQA while completing a Log Book, and the question paper will be set by the SQA and will be one hour in duration. Between these two pieces of assessment, SQA will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate and provide evidence of your skills, knowledge and understanding of a variety of the various concepts listed in the course assessment specification. The marks achieved from the practical activity and question paper are combined, and then the total mark will determine the final grade awarded (A-D).
The purpose of the question paper is to sample and evidence those areas of the course assessment which cannot be evidenced through the practical activity and the log book.
The question paper consists of several scenario-based questions with a spread of marks covering the topic areas listed.
The question paper has 60 marks out of a total 130 marks. This is scaled by the SQA to represent 30% of the overall marks for the course assessment.
COMMAND WORDS
Make sure you read each question thoroughly so you understand exactly what is being asked. Remember to answer questions correctly if you are asked to:
State: Use the correct terminology to name or state what is being asked for.
Describe: Give a descriptive account or details of processes, steps, properties and so on.
Explain: Describe your answer, but this time with justification and reasons. Think about how and why.
Examples of each type of question using the command words state, describe and explain are given below:
The handle was manufactured from a wooden blank on a wood lathe. Describe the 4 stages in preparing a wooden blank prior to fitting it to the lathe. (4)
The blank was turned to a cylinder. State the name of a turning tool used to produce the cylinder. (1)
The handle is manufactured from a softwood rather than a hardwood. Explain why the use of a softwood is considered more environmentally friendly than the use of a hardwood. (1)
QUESTION PAPER PRACTICE
One of the best forms of revision is to practice answering exam type questions. This will allow you to see the level of knowledge and understanding that is required and become familiar with the structure of the question paper you will be sitting in the actual exam. You will also sit a prelim in school which will be a practice run for the final exam and allow you to assess your current knowledge and understanding.
SQA Understanding Standards is a very useful tool where you can look at candidate evidence from previous years and access marking commentary allowing you an insight into how the question papers are marked as well as why candidates were/were not awarded marks for their answers. This will also let you see the correct way to answer state, describe and explain questions.
SQA Past Papers Illustrates the standard, structure and requirements of the question papers candidates will sit (includes marking instructions). These can be downloaded from the SQA website and used as Revision material for both the Prelim and final exam.
The six sections which make up the practical activity and the total amount of marks for each section are shown.
The practical activity has 70 marks out of a total 130. This is scaled by the SQA to represent 70% of the overall marks for the course assessment.
The standards and tolerances that your model will be assessed against are shown.
As you work through the practical activity, it is important that you understand what you are being assessed on and what the required standard is.
