LOG BOOK
While working on the manufacture of your practical model, you will be required to complete a log book. The mandatory log book, which is issued by the SQA carries a weighting of 15 marks of the 70 marks allocated to the practical activity. The three areas that are assessed within the log book are listed below with each area worth 5 marks in total:
Machine and power tool care & maintenance
Tool care and maintenance
Safe working procedures
For the machine and power tool care and maintenance section, you are expected to accurately record 5 occassions when you set up a machine or prepared a power tool for safe use. Within each description, you should ensure you have indicated the checks you made to the machine or power tool both prior to and after using that piece of equipment. If you have had to undertake any remedial action to repair or rectify a fault then this should be included in your description of the checks you have carried out. You are free to select ANY 5 to record in your log book.
EXAMPLES OF PROCEDURAL CHECKS TO UNDERTAKE
Setting up a woodturning lathe, belt sander, disc sander, pillar/pedestal drill or mortise machine.
Preparing a cordless or corded drill, cordless screwdriver, orbital sander, belt sander or a jig saw.
EXAMPLES OF PROCEDURAL CHECKS TO UNDERTAKE PRIOR TO USING A MACHINE OR POWER TOOL
You have been shown how and have been given permission by your teacher to use the machine or power tool.
You have familiarised yourself with the location of any emergency stop buttons that are fitted to the machine.
The workpiece is secured.
The guard, if fitted, is in place.
The dust extraction, if fitted, is in place.
The table, if fitted, is secured in place and set at the correct angle and height for the procedure to be carried out.
All parts, for example, sanding belts, drill bits, saw blades, plugs, cables and guards are in good working order and securely fitted.
EXAMPLES OF PROCEDURAL CHECKS TO UNDERTAKE AFTER USINGING A MACHINE OR POWER TOOL
The machine's power is switched off and the isolator is turned to the off position.
The power tool is switched off and if it's corded, its unplugged, and the cord is checked for damage.
If the power tool is cordless, check the remaining battery life left and consider putting it on charge ready for its next use.
Remove the drill bit/screwdriver bit from the chuck and store it away.
Remove the chuck key, if used with that machine/power tool.
Clear any waste wood/sawdust left on the machine after use.
If the tool rest on the wood lathe has been moved out of the way for sanding purposes, reposition it to its centred position on the bed of the lathe.
Report any faultsof, or damage to, the machines or power tools to your teacher to arrange for them to be repaired/replaced.
This section of the log book requires you to describe the procedures you undertook to set up, adjust or repair up to 5 different tools during the manufacture of your course assessment model. Your description should outline any remedial action you took to fix/adjust/repair the tool, followed by the steps you carried out to check the tool was in good working order. A selection of scenarios you could undertake and record in your workbook are given below.
TOOL CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Replacing a broken coping saw blade.
Setting a rebate plane to cut a rebate to a set depth and width.
Setting a plough plane to cut a groove to a set depth and specific position.
Setting a hand router to cut to a set depth.
Setting a marking guage to mark a line parallel to an edge to a specific depth.
Honing a cutting edge on a chisel.
Honing a cutting edge on a plane iron.
SAFE WORKING PROCEDURES
The mark you recieve for safe working procedures will be solely based on whether you have acted with health and safety in mind throughout the manufacture of your course assessment model. Your teacher will be observing your behaviour within the workshop and will be keepig a record of any reminders about inappropriate or unsafe behaviour they have had to issue to you. They will also record any interventions they have had to make to prevent unsafe use of any tools, machines or power tools. If you adhere to safe working procedures and your teacher has not had to issue you with any reminders or make any interventions then you will receive the full 5 marks allocated to this section of the practical activity.
