READER'S THEATER : COLUMBUS DAY 哥倫布日

Narrator one: A sea battle! The ship tipped and rocked. Suddenly it burst into flames. Splash! 旁白一:一場海戰!船傾斜搖晃,突然爆出火焰。
A spray of salt water flew into the air. A sailor had jumped into the ocean. 飛濺著鹽水。一名水手跳進海裡。
Narrator two: 旁白二:
The sailor swam to a floating oar.水手游到了一根漂浮的槳。
He gripped it to stay afloat. 他抓住它以保持浮在水面上。
Although he was miles from shore, he knew he would survive!
雖然他離岸有數英里,但他知道自己能活下來!
All: He wouldn't give up,though others might.
所有人:他不會放棄,儘管別人可能會。
He believed in himself when he thought he was right.
他相信自己,當他認為自己是對的時候。
Narrator one: This brave sailor was Christopher Columbus.
旁白一:這位勇敢的水手是克里斯多福·哥倫布。
Columbus: I grew up in Italy. 哥倫布:我在意大利長大。
My father was a weaver of cloth. 我父親是一個織布工。
He wanted me to be a weaver,too. 他也希望我成為一個織布工。
But I dreamed of being a sailor. 但我夢想成為一名水手。
Finally, my father agreed. 最終,我父親同意了。
Narrator one: Now Christopher Columbus was in the cold ocean water. But he wouldn't give up. 旁白一:現在,克里斯多福·哥倫布在冰冷的海水中。但他不會放棄。
All: Swimming and floating,working and resting.
所有人:游泳和漂浮,工作和休息。

He did make it safely to shore. 他安全地到達了岸邊。
He landed in Portugal. 他登陸在葡萄牙。
This was lucky for Columbus. 對哥倫布來說,這很幸運。
His brother lived there! 因為他的兄弟住在那裡!
Columbus' brother: 哥倫布的兄弟:
I own a map store. 我擁有一家地圖店。
I will give Columbus a job making maps.
我會給哥倫布一份制作地圖的工作。

Columbus talked with sailors who came to the store.
哥倫布和到店裡的水手們聊天。
He read about explorers like Marco Polo.

Marco Polo: 馬可·波羅:
I have traveled east from Italy on land. 我從意大利往東旅行。
I have gone to wonderful, faraway places. 我去了奇妙而遙遠的地方。
These places are called the Indies.這些地方被稱為印度。
Narrator two:
People were thrilled by the riches Marco Polo brought back.
旁白二:人們對馬可·波羅帶回來的財富感到興奮。
All: Silk and spices. 所有人:絲綢和香料。
Jewels and gold. 寶石和金子。
Wonderful things for all to behold.美好的東西供所有人欣賞
Columbus: I want those things, too! 哥倫布:我也想要那些東西!
Narrator one:
Columbus began making a plan to travel to the Indies.
旁白一:哥倫布開始制定一個前往印度的計劃。
He thought about the shape of the earth.
他想到地球的形狀。
Columbus: The earth is round,this much I know.
哥倫布:我知道地球是圓的。
Would sailing west be the way to go?
如果向西航行,是不是最好的方法呢?
Narrator two: Columbus decided not to go east over land.
旁白二:哥倫布決定不走東方的陸路。
He would sail west over the ocean!
而是橫越大洋向西航行!
Narrator one: But Columbus had some big problems.
旁白一:但是哥倫布有一些大問題。
Most people thought the ocean was too wide to cross.
大多數人認為這片海洋太遠了,無法跨越。
Townsperson one: It cannot be done! 鎮民一:這是不可能的!
Townsperson two: Impossible 鎮民二:不可能!
Townsperson three: The sea is too wide and unknown, they will never come back! 鎮民三:海洋太寬,太不熟悉,他們永遠不會回來!
Narrator two: Also, sailing west to the Indies would be expensive!
旁白二:此外,向西航行到印度會很昂貴!
Columbus did not have enough money.哥倫布沒有足夠的錢。
Columbus: I will ask the King of Portugal for help.
哥倫布:我會向葡萄牙國王尋求幫助。
Narrator one: First, Columbus explained his plan to the King. Then he asked for ships and money. 旁白一:首先,哥倫布向國王解釋了他的計劃。然後他要求船只和資金。
King of Portugal: Ships and money for a plan that sounds funny?
Ships and money for a plan that sounds funny? NO!
葡萄牙國王:為了一個聽起來可笑的計劃,給你船和錢?不行!
Narrator two: Columbus was sad. He was disappointed. But...
旁白二:哥倫布很傷心。他失望了。但是...
All: He wouldn't give up,though others might.
所有人:他不會放棄,儘管別人可能會。
He believed in himself when he thought he was right.
他相信自己當他認為自己是對的時候。
Columbus: I will go to see the King and Queen of Spain.
哥倫布:我會去見西班牙國王和女王。
Narrator one: The King and Queen listened to Columbus.
旁白一:國王和女王聽了哥倫布的計劃。
Then they asked a committee to study his plan.
然後他們要求一個委員會研究他的計劃。
All: Over and over,meeting and talking.
所有人:一遍又一遍,會議和談話。
Over and over,meeting and talking. 一遍又一遍,會議和談話。
Narrator two: After four years, the committee made up their mind.
旁白二:經過四年,委員會做出了決定。
King and Queen of Spain: It's a Silly Idea!
西班牙國王和女王:這是一個愚蠢的想法!
Narrator one: Poor Columbus. He was very disappointed. But...
旁白一:可憐的哥倫布。他非常失望。但是...
All: He wouldn't give up,though others might.
所有人:他不會放棄,儘管別人可能會。
He believed in himself when he thought he was right.
他相信自己,當他認為自己是對的時候。
Columbus: I'll go back to see the King and Queen of Spain.
哥倫布:我會回去見西班牙國王和女王。
Narrator two: The King and Queen again listened to Columbus.
旁白二:國王和女王再次聽取了哥倫布的意見。
He told them about his dreams of riches.
他告訴他們他的發財夢。
Columbus: Silks and spices, Jewels and gold!
哥倫布:絲綢和香料,珠寶和黃金!
Wonderful things for all to behold!
這些美妙的東西都是讓所有人都能擁有的!
Narrator one: Columbus tried to convince them.
旁白一:哥倫布試圖說服他們。
But once again King and Queen of Spain: NO

Columbus: Next, I'll visit the King of France.

Narrator two: He was on his way, when a messenger caught up with him.

Messenger: Please come back!Do be so kind! 信使:請回來!拜託!
The Queen of Spain has changed her mind! 西班牙女王改變了她的想法!
Today we can learn about courage from Columbus.
今天,我們可以從哥倫布身上學到勇氣。
All: We won't give up, though others might.
所有人:我們不會放棄,儘管別人可能會。
We'll believe in ourselves when we think we are right!
