It is the Mission of the Skaneateles Music Department to bring a wide variety of music making experiences to our students. We inspire a love of music making through singing, playing, performing, moving, and creating. It is our goal to serve the school and community through this art form.
Students in our music program are given a multitude of opportunities to perform for the community. In addition to a full calendar of traditional concerts, students perform at many local events including luncheons, nursing homes, malls and museums. We often partner with the Skaneateles Education Foundation to bring in college professors and other professionals to our schools, as well as commissioned pieces for our ensembles.
Students have the ability to work in state-of-the-art facilities including our rehearsal rooms, recording studio, audio lab (our media post-production suite) and recently renovated Auditorium.
Our program covers all aspects of recorded and live performance, both onstage and off. Whether its producing an original song in our recording studio, performing with a student-run string quartet, arranging a piece of music for your a cappella group or designing lights for the spring musical, there are a plenty of ways to engage with the performing arts in the Skaneateles Music Department.
The Skaneateles Band program begins in 4th grade and continues through high school, offering students eight years of musical growth and exploration. Students choose to study a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument, developing skills in music reading, performance, and artistic expression.
The Skaneateles Choral program begins in 5th grade and continues through high school. The choral program strives to enhance musicianship through singing. This allows every young singer to study and learn about many various styles of music as well as about their own voice. We do this through sight-reading, performance, and artistic expression during rehearsals and concerts.
The Skaneateles Orchestra program begins in 4th grade and continues through high school. Students may study violin, viola, cello, and double bass, and learn in both ensemble and small group settings. Students in orchestra develop listening skills, learn to blend their sound with others, and synchronize their playing to create a unified musical experience.
The Skaneateles Performing Arts Technology Program provides students with marketable and life-long skills in the performing arts including both recorded and live performance. Audio engineering, lighting design, live sound mixing, cinematography and other topics are addressed in the various courses offered.
The Skaneateles Theater Department believes in producing high-quality live performances that provide the opportunity for students to experience all facets of the collaborative nature of theater. Through main stage shows and coursework, students hone their skills in singing, acting and movement as well as technical theater.
