Having probed their own identities as well as a more structural analysis of power, Ethnic Studies students typically move on to units such as "Beliefs and Biases" where they explore the interplay of systemic factors on personal beliefs and interpersonal behaviors. In such units, students carry out activities such as media analysis to examine how dominant ideologies are disseminated in news, adverstising, and other avenues and how they can be critical consumers (and producers) of media. This is also a unit in which students frequently engage with the 4 I's of Oppression to understand how dominant marginalizing ideologies are sustained at systemic and interactional levels and how they can be subverted.Â
