Teamwork revolves around two fundamental concepts: communication and collaboration.


Workgroups have everything sent down from on high. The members may discuss together, but the leader is the one who makes the decision and then delegates to the members. With a team, there is no real leader like in the sense of a workgroup.

Blog (shortening of “weblog”) is an online journal or informational website displaying information in the reverse chronological order.


Desktop Sharing Sees desktop and actions taken. Does not require the application software to be installed.


Online Conference: Takes place on the Internet. It is an interactive web site, where participants log on and read papers, enter discussions with other delegates and presenters, have live chat, and are able to pose questions and interact with people from all over the world.


Network Address Translation: (Slide 15) Creates problems for peer-to-peer communication.


Peer-to-peer (P2P) communications: In a P2P network, the "peers" are computer systems which are connected to each other via the Internet. Files can be shared directly between systems on the network without the need of a central server. In other words, each computer on a P2P network becomes a file server as well as a client. Network Address Translation (NAT) makes it difficult for P2P systems to discover IP addresses.


TelePresence (Cisco), first introduced in October 2006, is a range of products developed by Cisco Systems designed to link two physically separated rooms so they resemble a single conference room regardless of location. Term chosen to emphasize that it it more that an online conference.


Collaboration Document tools that enable real-time access and updates for concurrent work across the room or around the world.


Version Control. management of changes to documents, computer programs, large web sites, and other collections of information.


Wikis, a knowledge base website on which users collaboratively modify content and structure directly from the web browser.


Information Rights Management: The creator of the document gets to specify the list of people who can open or edit a document.


Business Process Management (Workflow): methods to discover, model, analyze, measure, improve, optimize, and automate business processes.


Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS) an interactive computer based system that facilitates a number of decision-makers (working together in a group) in finding solutions to problems that are unstructured in nature.


Knowledge Management: the process of capturing, distributing, and effectively using knowledge. This information can be stored in a knowledge base.


Sharepoint: empowers teamwork with dynamic and productive team sites for every project team, department, and division. Share files, data, news, and resources.
